You Won't Forget Me

You Won't Forget Me

by Shirley Horn

CD

Overview

Miles Davis hated to revisit the past, but he did for Shirley Horn. His lovely 50s-style solo on the ballad "You Won't Forget Me" is certainly a highlight of this heart-rending recording. But neither Davis nor any of the other heavyweight guest stars ever steal the spotlight away from the diminutive singer-pianist who finally became a jazz star more than 30 years after coming on the scene. Horn is in exceptional form here, covering both familiar material -- "Beautiful Love," "It Had to Be You," "You Stepped Out of a Dream," "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying" -- and uncommon fare -- "Too Late Now," "If You Go," "The Music That Makes Me Dance." Everything is interpreted in Horn's inimitable, intimate style, the enticing breathy delivery, the crawling tempos, and the keen interplay between her voice and piano accompaniment. Among the other star soloists paying tribute to the new grande dame of jazz singing are Wynton and Branford Marsalis and harmonica virtuoso Toots Thielemans.
