Lucky took a step backward, gulping nervously. Darkpaw stiffened beside him, shocked. Lucky was sure he saw a flash of guilt cross the young tom's eyes. What was going on? The two cats that stood before them was a young she cat, about Darkpaw's age, tawny colored with brown spots scattered on her fur and dark brown bands around her tail and legs. Beside her was a brown tom, his gaze sharp.
"There you are Darkpaw!" The shecat bounded over to Darkpaw and nuzzled his cheek. Darkpaw flicked his tail in annoyance, obviously emberrased. "What is this Darkpaw?" Mewed the brown tom. "The twoleg place is dangerous - there's no prey there!" Darkpaw shuffled his paws nervously. "Sorry Hawkfeather." Hawkfeather was looking past Darkpaw and at Lucky. "Who is this?" He asked.
Lucky froze. "Just a kittypet. It's nothing." Darkpaw mewed. Rage flooded through Lucky, but he kept it down. "I'm Lucky." He said. "I'm Rabbitpaw!" Mewed the she cat. Hawkfeather gave her a look that made her quiet. Lucky continued. "I was wandering through the forest until I found him eating a shrew. Than he said-" "What?" Hawkfeather. Lucky stopped, feeling unsure. What had he said?
Darkpaw gave him a glare, and Lucky gave him a sorry look. "Darkpaw, this is the second time you disobeyed the warrior code!" Hawkfeather hissed. "Certaintly you would have learned by now!" "I was hungry!" Protested Darkpaw. Hawkfeather shook his head. "That's no excuse." Lucky frowned. What was the warrior code?
"What's the warrior code?" He asked. Rabbitpaw turned toward him. "The warrior code is the rules the clan is governed by." Rabbitpaw explained quietly. Lucky had to admit, that sounded intresting. "The clans are RiverClan, WindClan, ThunderClan, and ShadowClan." Rabbitpaw continued. Lucky nodded. "Thank you for the information Rabbitpaw." Mewed Hawkfeather. Darkpaw's ears still drooped, he was in for trouble for sure. "That shrew smells nice. I'm hungry." Commented Rabbitpaw.
The tantalizing smell from the remains of the shrew reached Lucky too, making his mouth water. But apparently it had reached something else too. The birds were strangly quiet. The bushes behind Hawkfeather and Rabbitpaw rustled, and Lucky held his breath, hoping it wasn't another cat. Instead, a fox lept out!
Lucky's heart pounded in his ears. The fox must have smelled the remains of the shrew! He backed up, afraid. The fox lept out, than skidded to a halt. Lucky was scared, he'd never seen a fox before. It was big, and it had a bushy tail and and a ugly face Darkpaw looked as if he was about to turn tail and flee. Just then, the fox pounced on Lucky!
Lucky darted out of the way in time. The fox swung its paw at him, the air being knocked out of him. Lucky swung his paw too, scoring a clawmark on the fox's muzzle. The fox hissed in rage and lunged for his throat. Hawkfeather jumped on the fox's back just in time, digging his claws into the fox's shoulders. The fox rolled on him, crushing him.
Lucky ran foward and slashed the fox's back. The fox lept off Hawkfeather, yelping. It pounced for Lucky, but Lucky darted uderneath and lept on the fox. He closed his jaws around the fox's throat, gagging at the taste of the fox fur. Darkpaw was still unmoving, but Rabbitpaw lunged, biting the fox's leg until it bled. The fox collapsed to the ground. Hawkfeather swiped the fox's face, leaving a possible scar. The fox shook Lucky off and bounded away.
(Thanks for reading! ~ Stars &star Above)
