Overview

It is hard to imagine a more brilliantly recorded release of new orchestral music than this one. WOMEN WRITE MUSIC was masterminded by legendary producer Sir George Martin, who made history decades ago by signing the Beatles, and in a long and illustrious career has worked with pop and jazz icons from Jeff Beck to Stan Getz. But classical music is Martin's first and lasting love. In this program of nine passionate, original pieces by women composers from Britain, China, Holland, Canada, Cuba, the U.S., and France, Sir George uses creative sound engineering to help the music flower. The program starts with "Nocturne," a big technicolor spectacular by Elizabeth Maconchy, followed by the quiet refinement of "Antiphony" by Chen Yi. The Asian sounds of Yi's music are echoed in Tera de Marez Oyens's impressionistic "Introduzione for Orchestra." Canadian composer Jean Coulthard's strongly tonal and instantly communicative "Music to St Cecilia" offers a more invigorating and upbeat mood. Tania León's Afro-Cuban-sounding "Batá" is followed by Nicola LeFanu's spooky "Preludio II." Doreen Carwithen's "Suffolk Suite" recalls Vaughan Williams's stylish orchestral scene-painting. Sir George clearly lavished on WOMEN WRITE MUSIC the same love as he did on his immortal Beatles albums. Conductor David Snell is an imaginative advocate for all of these works and the British Foundation Philharmonic Orchestra plays with infectious enthusiasm.
