I bought the book because of an interest I have in the fur trade and the men who were a part of it. After ther first 30 pages, I began to have my doubts. I researched the authors and was beginning to question the books accuracy with actual historical events. I almost quit reading. I wanted to give the book a bad review; however, I made up my mind to finish it simply because I paid money for it. Here is the rub: it isn't until you finish it that the authors' tie up all the loose ends and bring the story to its conclusion. I give this version four stars due to a few typos. Some of the dream states are a little hard to follow, at least for me. Otherwise, it was a good book.

Roger Zelazny is one of my favorite science fiction writers. The master of the novella and the short novel, he has provided me with hundreds of hours of good reading (and rereading) and his works have inspired hundreds more hours of great conversation. So it was with great interest that I discovered Wilderness, a non-sf western which he coauthored with Gerald Hausman. In the early nineteenth century, two legendary mountain men each trekked through the untamed wilderness under extraordinary conditions. For John Colter, the challenge was seven hundred members of the Blackfeet nation who were trying to kill him. For Hugh Glass, the problem was a grizzly bear that caught and mauled him. Left for dead by his companions, he managed to travel one hundred miles to find help. Both stories are exciting and fascinating for their insights into survival in the wilderness, but Hugh Glass’ will also catch your heart up in your throat. One of the men who abandoned him was his adopted son and part of what motivates Hugh to live is his powerful need for vengeance. Their eventual meeting will bring tears to your eyes. I enjoyed this book but it wasn’t one of Zelazny’s best. 3 stars.
