About the Author

Louis Sachar conducted his own “class survey” in order to find the best title for this book. He told the students in the classrooms he visited that he wanted the title to end with a question mark and have the word “pick” in it. Of all the titles that were suggested, Louis chose Why Pick on Me? Louis is also the bestselling author of the award-winning novel Holes, as well as Small Steps, The Cardturner, Stanley Yelnats’ Survival Guide to Camp Green Lake, There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom, The Boy Who Lost His Face, Dogs Don’t Tell Jokes, Fuzzy Mud, and the rest of the Marvin Redpost series, among many others. This is the second book of the Marvin Redpost Series. This is a book that tells the story of a young boy, Marvin, who is constantly being picked on for being seen picking his nose. I think this would be good to read towards the beginning of the school year when students are starting to pick on each other. This book could be incorporated into a language arts lesson by having students create a Venn Diagram and compare and contrast this book to the first book in the series, which would show their understanding of the two stories. Also, students could write a paragraph on how their school experiences relate to those of Marvin's.

This installment of Marvin Redpost is even better than the last. In this book, he is accused of picking his nose and the rumors get out of control. This is a very funny book that any second or third grader would love.

Marvin Redpost Why Pick on Me is a funny book that is easy for the reader but is has deeper meanings. It is told from the 9 yr old third grade perspective. It also has black and white sketches that help move the story along. When the littlest thing seems to ruin your life forever. Or does it? This book can help you see how things can turn around with the littlest thing too if you can look at it differently.I thought this was a funny look into the third grade. Sachar does a good job at letting you tag along with Marvin on his way to taking care of a bully.
