Overview

Life is meant to be savored, but that’s not easy with no family, limited prospects and a past you’d rather not talk about. Still, Callie Smith doesn’t know how to feel when she discovers she has a brother and a sister—Malcolm, who grew up with affection, wealth and privilege, and Keira, a streetwise twelve-year-old. Callie doesn’t love being alone, but at least it’s safe. Despite her trepidation, she moves into the grand family home with her siblings and grandfather on the shores of Lake Washington, hoping just maybe this will be the start of a whole new life.

But starting over can be messy. Callie and Keira fit in with each other, but not with their posh new lifestyle, leaving Malcolm feeling like the odd man out in his own home. He was clever enough to turn a sleepy Seattle mail-order food catalog into an online gourmet powerhouse, yet he can’t figure out how to help his new sisters feel secure. Becoming a family will take patience, humor, a little bit of wine and a whole lot of love. But love isn’t Malcolm’s strong suit…until a beautiful barista teaches him that an open heart, like the family table, can always make room for more.

In this emotional, funny and heartfelt story, Susan Mallery masterfully explores the definition of a modern family—blended by surprise, not by choice—and how those complicated relationships can add unexpected richness to life.

Heart warming and a must read

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. When We Found Home was a wonderful and enjoyable read. The characters are well drawn and interesting, and the problems they face are challenging and realistic. The book is written through multiple points of view of the 4 main adults as they try to become family, their relationships and trials.

I love books about families. Whether they be dysfunctional or somewhat functional, (because is ANY family just plain functional??) the intricacies in family relationships is just super interesting to me.  And this book is a fun one. One day, Callie Smith finds out that even though her whole life she thought she had no family, she actually has a brother and a sister, Malcolm and Keira.  They all decide to move into their grandfather's grand home on the shores of Lake Washington, to get to know each other. The summer proves to be more than they expected in good and bad ways, teaching them each what it means to be a family and love each other in ways they never had before. You will fall in love with this sweet, new family of siblings, while wanting to move to Lake Washington. Ha. I really loved this book, and will be recommending it to all my friends!

This is a excellent story. It brings together people related by blood and watches them grow into a family. The characters are complex and believable. Susan Mallery does an excellent job of weaving together a story of fleshed out complex people into a satisfying story.

Check out the full review at Kritters Ramblings Three half siblings that didn't know they each existed until recently and due to the love and pursuit of a grandfather they are brought into a home and each get a life reset. One of my complaints is about Callie and Santiago. He meets her in the warehouse and doesn't know who she is and finds out from Malcolm, but has yet to have a conversation with her and then decides she is the love of his life and he will pursue her, REALLY? He went from 0 to 80 in 10 seconds and without even talking to her, didn't love it. So he admits it out loud, but I just couldn't get behind it, it was just so weird. And it continued throughout the book, I never really got behind that pairing.

Susan Mallery did an excellent job of writing a story about family, new beginnings, and second chances. It was so interesting to see how Keira, Callie and Malcolm interact and finally become family. I really loved this quote from the book, "When your joy comes from within, no one can take it from you." That is so very true. I loved reading about the Carlesso family. I had a hard time putting it down, since I wanted to keep reading to see what happened next. Well done!

One of Mallory’s best! The story of an old Italian/American family that finds out there were two unknown granddaughters. The “girls” were born to different mothers with two very different upbringings. Grandfather Alphonso brings them into the family home and business. There are, of course, ups and downs as there are in any family situations but they make an effort to make it work.

I love Susan Mallery's romance novels especially her Fool's Gold series, but her women's fiction books leave me struggling for something more or less at times. For the most part I really enjoyed When We Found Home and would definitely recommend it to other readers, but the beginning of the book was filled with so many topics that revolved around what was and wasn't politically correct that I struggled with the most important parts of the story. Keep in mind that none of these issues would have changed the dynamics in the story so they had no reason to be there except for the author wanting to address them. These are the "little darlings" that should have been scrapped during editing because all they did was take away from a very interesting and poignant story about three people finding they had siblings that they never knew about and how they learned to find love and home. The second half of the book flowed so much better and I came to love this family and the many people that they loved and cared for throughout the book.

What a touching, loving, interesting, and sometimes confounding book! The newest by author Susan Mallery, When We Found Home, is all these things and more. First, you have a grandfather who is all about family. Then your dad, who is deceased, cared less about family. Now you find out your dad not only didn’t care about you but had two other children your grandfather wants to bring into the family. Poor Malcolm. Malcolm is running the family business, now he gets to be ‘big brother’ to two new sisters. Callie is a 20 something who made some poor choices. Keira is a 12-year-old in foster care, whose mother made some poor choices. Both are hesitant to bond with Malcolm and are a bit suspicious of the whole ‘We’re gonna be a family’ thing that their grandfather is advocating. Add in an accident, new love interests, a problem with the family business, and you have the makings of a fabulous story. When We Found Home looks at family dynamics, especially when family is what you must make, rather than what you are familiar with since birth. Genetics made them siblings. Love, trust, and caring, make them family and give them the ability to finally find home.

This was a great book. This story was about siblings that are newly acquainted learning how to get along, new love interests for the two older siblings and there's even a little mysterious theft that's going on at the family company. The characters are absolutely fabulous! You can't help but love the youngest, Keira. Once I started reading this book I couldn't put it down.

I love Susan Mallery's writing style.  She does a wonderful job of giving readers all the feels while adding in just the right amount of quirk and fun.  And with When We Found Home, she doesn't disappoint.     Malcolm joined the Carlesso family when he was 12.  And while he had a great relationship with his mom and formed a bond with his new-found grandfather, his dad was pretty awful... and now they are finding out just how awful with the addition of a couple of half sisters.  You just have to feel for Malcolm as he struggles to relate to his new family dynamic.  His has no idea how to connect with his 12 year old half sister, Keira, and the sudden appearance of a new sister only a couple of years younger than him makes it even more complicated.  Luckily, with the help of a lovely barista, he just might figure things out.   Callie has gone from having nothing to having everything, including a family, and she's just not sure how to handle it.  Adding in an intimidating and emotionally distant brother doesn't help.  But the relationship she forms with her new little sister, as the two of the bond over their now drastically different circumstances, will just melt your heart.  Throw in a guy who thinks she hung the moon, and her life might become just about perfect.   Keira is the one I wanted to cuddle the most out of the group (although Malcolm comes in a close second - the man is just clueless but he does try ... ish).  Her childhood was awful, including a druggie mom and a stint in foster care.  It's no wonder that she's convinced her new posh life won't last.  Luckily an accident, a friendly barista, and the appearance of her new half-sister just might be the catalysts to help her trust in her new situation.   Mallery uses her trademark wit & snappy dialogue, along with engaging & well-developed characters, to deliver a wonderfully emotional read.  While there is a romance for both Malcolm and Callie, its the three of them trying to figure out how to become a family that really steals the show.  The complications from being thrown together at this point in their lives make it even that much harder to find a way to connect but with a little guidance, some honesty, and sheer will, they just might make something wonderful out of a terrible beginning.   **Review given honestly and freely after receipt of a reader copy. This opinion is completely my own and was not influenced in any way.**

Such a sweet and heartwarming story! When We Found Home interweaves so many stories--there's half-siblings Malcom, Callie, and Keira, who have to learn how to be a family after years of not knowing they were; Delaney, who survived heartbreaking losses and may have taken her life down the wrong path who befriends Keira and might want something more with Malcom; and Santiago, Malcom's best friend and coworker who loves his family but also finds himself falling for Callie. Watching the siblings forge a relationship is possibly the best part of the book--seeing Malcom's name in Keira's phone go from "a**hole brother" to "jerky brother" to "SAB" (slightly annoying brother--she's twelve) made me laugh as many times as it made me sigh. The POVs in the story were Delaney's, Callie's, Malcom's, and Santiago's, and it was a good blend of the four of them. Overall I felt that Callie and Malcom were the most consistently sympathetic characters--both relationship black moments were essentially caused by Delaney('s fear) and Santiago('s choosing his family over Callie), which was a bit annoying at the time, but they did make up for it in the end, and even if their resolutions did happen a bit quickly, they were still satisfying. Rating: 3 1/2 stars / C+ I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

More and more you find family with half siblings. This was a heart warming story of two sisters and a brother who are fortunate to have a loving grand father. If it weren't for him they wouldn't have ever known about each other. His wealth brings them a life they never dreamed of having. Fun read!!

I am a long time fan of Susan Mallery and love her Fool's Gold and Happily, Inc. series as well as all of her Harlequin Romances. Now, I am also a BIG fan of her contemporary women's fiction. In Where We Found Home, Mallery explores how we find and create the family we need.
Malcolm Carlesso is the heir to a large family fortune and gourmet foods company. Malcolm, and his sisters, Keira and Callie, are the result of their father's careless use of woman. All three are illegitimate. All three desperately need the love and security only a family can provide. Their beloved grandfather, Alberto, is the one that finds and unites all three siblings.
In Where We Found Home, Malcolm, Keira, and Callie wrestle with their need for one another and their inability to bridge the emotional gap that separates them from one another. Keira, at 12 years old, needs love and security the most. Malcolm must learn to be both a father and brother to his youngest, neediest sibling. Callie wrestles with her own demons and must overcome her feelings of inadequacy to accept both her family's love and her new wealth.
Malcolm is also recovering from a broken heart and risks it all to embark on new relationship with Delaney Holbrook. Delaney is starting a new life after her fiance's death and a dramatic change in career. Malcolm's long time friend, Santiago Trejo, feels an immediate attraction to his best friend's sister, Callie. Her beauty, work ethic, and honesty immediately captivates him.
Susan Mallery brilliantly captures how complicated our lives can be in Where We Found Home. I can't recommend this novel enough!!! I could not put it down once I started reading it. I love the complexity of the family dynamics as well as the blossoming romances between the characters. Where We Found Home is a complex, rich story and will immediately captivate you!
