A 2017 National Book Award for Young People's Literature Finalist

When Nina Faye was fourteen, her mother told her there was no such thing as unconditional love. Nina believed her. Now she'll do anything for the boy she loves, to prove she's worthy of him. But when he breaks up with her, Nina is lost. What is she if not a girlfriend? What is she made of? Broken-hearted, Nina tries to figure out what the conditions of love are.

"Finally, finally, a book that is fully girl, with all of the gore and grace of growing up female exposed." —Carrie Mesrobian, author of the William C. Morris finalist, Sex & Violence

*CW/TW: Abortion, animal cruelty This book is deep and different from books that I have read. I loved Nina, the main character. She is deeply flawed, makes questionable decisions, her actions and words are also questionable but these things make her such a great character. Her relationship with her parents is extremely complex as well, and I feel that some people will be able to relate to this book. Throughout the book, the reader gets short stories written by Nina that are creative and interesting to read. This book was an emotional read, and I highly recommend reading the author's note at the end of the book.

Sharp, intelligent, raw, and real. This book isn't for the faint of heart, but I loved it so very much.

Gritty, dark, ugly, hard to read and because of that--it was beautiful. You will be uncomfortable when you read this book and that is the gift that Arnold leaves us with. WHAT GIRLS ARE MADE OF gives us a brave look inside the body, mind and heart of a sixteen year old girl and empowers girls to be unafraid to really see themselves and what they truly are made of.

I had a little trouble getting into this book. I like the idea of it, I like what the author is trying to say, but it came across very disjointed and it was hard to tell where things were going because the narrator kept jumping back and forth and every which way. There was also the interludes between chapters and until it gets explained why those are happening, it is very confusing and distracting. Once I got to the last couple of chapters, everything finally started to come together and make more sense, but I feel like the story would have had more impact, for me, if there was more fluidity to the telling of it. There are also some triggers to watch out for, animal abuse/death and the topic of abortion.
