Early one morning, Wally was going for his usual walk. Wally was the Kings' family dog. He was a very small dog with long, shaggy hair.
Wally had black patches on his paws. Some people said the spots came to be when Wally was a puppy, and he stepped in a pail of black paint that Mr. King was using while painting the house trim.
Sam was Wally's best friend. Sam was a rabbit who lived in the Kings' backyard. The thing that was so special about Wally was that he talked to the animals, even the wild ones.
Wally was on his way to Sam's house when he saw Peter the skunk running back and forth in the strawberry patch. "What's the matter, Peter?" asked Wally.
"My baby daughter is gone," cried Peter in a worried little voice.
"Gone where?" asked Wally, with his ears drooped and his head tilted to the side.
"We don't know," said Peter. "Mrs. Skunk and I woke up, and she wasn't there."
"We will gather the rest of our friends and start searching until we find her," said Wally. And he and Peter ran off to gather their friends.
As they reached Sam's home, Wally called for Sam to come quickly. "I need your help right away!" said Wally. "Mr. Skunk's daughter is gone and we must find her!"
Sam said, "I will get Mrs. Rabbit and the Woodchuck family, and we will meet you at the garden gate." Sam hopped away.
When Wally and Peter arrived at Mr. Raccoon's house, Mrs. Raccoon was fixing breakfast. "Come in, Wally and Peter; won't you have some biscuits?"
"No thank you," said Wally. "We came to get your help to find Peter's baby daughter. She is missing."
"Oh my," said Mrs. Raccoon. "We will surely help find Baby Skunk."
Mr. and Mrs. Raccoon, Wally, and Peter rushed off to the garden gate. When they got there, they found Sam, Mrs. Rabbit, and the Woodchuck family waiting for them. Wally decided it would be a good idea for the friends to look in different places.
"Whoever finds Baby Skunk will hang this red scarf of mine on the garden gate," said Wally. Wally placed his scarf on the ground next to the gate.
"We will all meet back here at lunchtime, when the town whistle blows," said Peter.
