After seeing the Syracuse Opera in concert form perform "The Flying Dutchman" I wanted to hear more of the motifs and a varied listening experience of the overtures and themes that we recognize as some pretty inventive and really thrilling music. This CD was exactly what I was hoping to find, and I reccomend it highly, if you want a primer and do not want to go into the deeper experience of a whole opera. I listen mostly while I am painting,

very nice sound and a good collection of respectable conductors. Except for the truly uninspired Gerde Tannhauser, all selections are acceptable, the Bohm prelude to "Tristan.." is very good and the von Karajan Ride of the Valkyries is right out of the opera--with beautiful vocals (uncredited) --odd!!
