Chrissie Hynde may never breathe fire like the punk-rock queen she once was, but she's got no intention of sweeping out the embers left over from conflagrations past. Her first album in five years, VIVA EL AMOR, doesn't cook so much as smolder with personal intensity and good old-fashioned angst. The excellent lead cut, "Popstar," sees her warn her ex-boyfriend about hooking up with a wannabe diva who's as "predictable as Armageddon," eventually telling him "you should have stuck with me." Not a bad theme for a middle-aged rocker looking to keep her old fans' interest, and tracks like the classic-Chrissie first single "Human," the punky, sassy "Nails on the Road," and the effervescent "Who's Who" show that she has nothing to worry about. Sure, few will expect the Edith Piaf impression on "Rabo Du Nube," but "Legalize Me" manages to kick out the jams like the Pretenders of old.
