Preston & Child return with their #1 bestselling series, confronting FBI Special Agent Pendergast with the one challenge he never expected: a partner.

After an overhaul of leadership at the FBI's New York field office, A. X. L. Pendergast is abruptly forced to accept an unthinkable condition of continued employment: the famously rogue agent must now work with a partner.

Pendergast and his new teammate, junior agent Coldmoon, are assigned to Miami Beach, where a rash of killings by a bloodthirsty psychopath are distinguished by a confounding M.O.: cutting out the hearts of his victims and leaving them-along with cryptic handwritten letters-at local gravestones, unconnected save in one bizarre way: all belonged to women who committed suicide.

But the seeming lack of connection between the old suicides and the new murders is soon the least of Pendergast's worries. Because as he digs deeper, he realizes the brutal new crimes may be just the tip of the iceberg: a conspiracy of death that reaches back decades.

A series this long is bound to have lows, this is one of them. The mystery is generic and bland. The new partner is an empty suit, liking over brewed coffee is not intresting or funny. The FBI antagonist is introduced only to immediately back down then get promoted out of the picture. Feels like a filler book with no energy or direction. Hopefully the next book will be a return to form.

Not my favorite Pendergast novel, moved a bit slower than usual, but still a good murder mystery. Preston/Child are still leaps and bounds ahead of other authors.

This book, just as all of the previous Pendergast novels, was Great! I read them in a day & I’m always extremely disappointed when I reach the end.

This 18th book in the series does not disappoint . I so enjoy S.A. Perdergast and his unconventional methods to solve crimes. His partner was enjoyable. All in all a good read!

I’m a serious Pendergast fan, so I really looked forward to this novel. It didn’t have any of the magic of the other novels. In fact, I really still couldn’t tell anyone the whole story. There were too many people to try to keep track of and not enough reminders of the characters by the authors. I still love the detective, but this story felt too disjointed.

I enjoyed the story, but would have liked it more if it were told more from Pendergast's perspective.

Good read but certainly not one of my favorites.

Actually, Pendergast did not need to be the main character. It was a good plot with good action and wrapped up quickly. Considering it was a Pendergast story, though, I expected more. A little clumsy in the beginning but still a good read.

I must disagree with a few of the not so wonderful reviews on this one. Not that every Preston & Child novel is a fantastic read, even some Penderghast ones, but this one did Penderghast justice and I really liked the new character despite his choice of coffee. This book shows that Penderghast can work difficult cases even when they don't involve some sort of occult or supernatural values. A good detective story.

I have read all of the Agent Pendergast novels. Each one has been a page turning adventure. I always look forward to the next one! I recommend each one of them and all the other works written by Preston and Child.
