When it comes to graphic novels, as far as I am concerned illustrations come in 2 flavours, ‘By Jove, I believe that the artist is the very incarnation of Michelangelo herself/himself’, and ‘What’s that supposed to be? This falls firmly into the Michelangelo pot, as in, I could tell at a glance what everything was without the need to routinely scratch my head. So kudos to Alan Robinson for some nice artwork. V-Wars is a plot driven story. There is a not so subtle underlying subtext, racism, fear of change, terrorism, and conflict. The Ice virus epidemic may have come and gone, but it has left behind devastation in its wake, stimulating an ancient mutant gene which has turned thousands into blood sucking vampires’. The fear and the feeding has brought the Beats and Bloods together, but only in hatred and war. There will be several volumes with various writers lined up to jump into the pot in addition to Maberry. There were a couple of twists in this one so expect more in the future. Some of those twists were not totally unexpected, so there was no mind blowing epic adventuring. The story flows without stuttering, and is easily digestible in one bottom comforting sitting. Enjoyable. Received in exchange for an honest review on Darkness Beckons. Urthwild
