Long before there was a Christina or Britney, there was a big-voiced 15-year-old named Jaci Velasquez. The young singer's diva aspirations first took Christian music by storm, then the Latin music field, making her a unique crossover sensation. Now age 22 and a music industry veteran, Velasquez has long been ready to leave her sugary pop and superficial "I love Jesus" message behind. So it's refreshing to hear Unspoken, which introduces us to Jaci Velasquez the woman. Her depth of experience and mature vocal style are in ample evidence here, as she blends a smooth-as-butter tone with Sarah McLachlan-inspired etherealism. More to the point is the lyric candor on display throughout Unspoken. Indeed, the title is somewhat revealing, as Velasquez shares a heart that had previously been camouflaged by glossy production and a superficial message. "I tremble at rejection, I'm scared to be alone," she sings on "The Real Me," one of her seven co-writes on Unspoken. "This is the real me, with flaws and fears of intimacy. Can you deal with the real me?" Hearing her powerful delivery here and elsewhere, the answer is an enthusiastic affirmative. Velasquez is still a vocal sensation, but the nuance on a diva-style anthem like "I'm Alive" shows a new maturity -- even better is her stellar performance on the Tommy Sims–produced "Shine," one of the best cuts on Unspoken, as emotionally deep as it is musically impressive. Jaci Velasquez has long been a star in the Christian music field, but this record reveals the singer as a true artist.
