This is a book for women who want or need a nudge to start writing poetry. Nyemaster's goal with this book is to get women to see poetry as a form for self-expression, like journal-writing. She introduces readers to several forms of poetry and suggests ways to use them, for example, writing a sonnet to explore an emotional matter, writing a sestina to capture a memory, or writing a ghazal to let yourself daydream. I thought this was a wonderful addition to the world of books on writing poetry and a welcome change from all the books out there meant to help you get poems ready for publication. This would be a good book for a woman who's interested in the idea of poetry, but who hasn't written a line in her life.

Wendy Nyemaster's book really helped me unleash my inner poem! I'm no poet, but her easy to follow and thorough chapters made it easier! As a busy working mother of two young children, this book gave me a creative outlet. I urge everyone out there to try a chapter and see what a difference it can make!

This is a fantastic book written by a woman for women! With author Wendy Nyemaster's conversational tone, she takes on several different forms of poetry in a way that makes sense to a novice. Besides some haikus here and there in grade school, I had never written any poetry. By the end of this book, I had written 5 different types of poems and felt so liberated! Ms. Nyemaster gives you permission to write poetry even if you never decide to share the words with another living person. Inspired, I have started a journal and am enjoying jotting down my thoughts and feelings in various forms! The 'Poet Posse', an eclectic group of women Ms. Nyemaster calls upon throughout the book to share examples of poetry, were delightful to get to know. I would recommmend this book to anyone!

In this terrific book, author Wendy Nyemaster shows how everyday modern women can use poetry to inspire and inform their daily lives. Nyemaster covers 10 different forms of poetry and assigns a different purpose to each. If you need to work through a difficult situation, use the sonnet. If you seem to have lost your way in life, try the list poem, or for spiritual direction, the prayer poem. But not all of the topics are so weighty. If you simply want to appreciate life¿s small moments, the haiku is it. What¿s so neat about this book is, it really works. Although I hadn¿t written much poetry before, I was intrigued by Nyemaster¿s thesis, so I took this book as a challenge. I¿ve tried several different forms and found them all rewarding. It¿s easy for women to lose themselves in the grind of everyday life. Writing my poems helped me to remember who I am, what I am about, and what I want to accomplish in life. I felt uplifted, rejuvenated, joyous. What woman couldn¿t use a little lift or even a full-blown epiphany in her life? Some of the poems are more challenging to write than others, but Nyemaster makes it doable, by walking you through each form and giving a wide variety of examples. She includes some of her own poems and suggests others from famous women poets as further reading. But to prove that anyone can ¿Unleash the Poem Within,¿ Nyemaster also includes original poems written by the ¿Poet Posse,¿ a group of women of various age ranges, some married, some single, some without kids, moms working outside the home, moms working at home, etc. The women also discuss the process of writing and the realizations their poems brought them, which shows how accessible and effective the process is. Anyone can ¿ and should ¿ Unleash the Poem Within!
