Kenny G and the whole contemporary jazz crew didn't spring out of nowhere. Their stylistic forefather is Grover Washington Jr., a stylish saxophonist whose mellow sound and easy-grooving solos typified the jazz-inflected music then becoming popular during the '70s and '80s. Listening to this new best-of collection brings home how virile and genuinely funky Washington's approach was, particularly in comparison to many of today's contemporary jazz stars who followed in his wake.

On the signature 1970's material -- "Inner City Blues (Makes me Wanna Holler)," "Mr. Magic," "It Feels So Good" -- you can hear how Washington himself has followed in the footsteps of earlier r&b instrumental heroes, including saxophonists Hank Crawford and David "Fathead" Newman. Washington also knew when the addition of vocals could take a song straight to hitsville. "Just the Two of Us" his classic collaboration with Bill Withers, and "The Best is Yet to Come," with guest singer Patti Labelle, are perfect examples of how sharing the spotlight can sometimes pay off big. For Washington's later work, turn to the new, PRIME CUTS:THE GREATEST HITS:1987-1999.
