Overview

In a world ever more focused upon global warming, climate change and the increased scarcity of resources Ugly is a dark comedy set in a future where food and water are dangerously scarce. A tale of four people who may have to kill their angels and become more like their devils if they are going to survive. Emotional, intense and visceral, this play breaks rules. It will also break your heart…
Ugly is not pretty, a timely reminder of what we are doing to our planet.....reading it might just change your life.

About the Author

Emma writes for theatre spaces and unusual places. Recent collaborators include: Slung Low, Chol Theatre, Ovalhouse, The Nightingale Theatre, Look Left Look Right, West Yorkshire Playhouse, The Keats House Festival, Theatre in the Mill and Forest Fringe. Emma’s work is often fantastical, surreal and funny, ranging from dark political satire for adults through to adventure comedy for children. She has worked for Red Ladder Theatre Company; writing two plays which have toured nationally (Forgotten Things, shortlisted for the 2009 Meyer-Whitworth Award and Ugly, published by Oberon in 2010). Emma has also written plays to be performed in a house, a bed, the backstage area of the West Yorkshire Playhouse and most recently with Northern Big Board, a swimming pool in Bradford. Emma was Writer in Residence at West Yorkshire Playhouse during the New Writing Season 2012. She is presently attending an invitation playwriting group at The Royal Court and writing/rehearsing Freakoid - a dark, queer-future, comedic one-woman show that she will be performing at Ovalhouse Feb/March 2013. Emma is excited.
