The Neil Young legend created by Neil and his acolytes would have you believe that Young, disillusioned by success and the death of guitarist Danny Whitten, reacted against the massive sales of Harvest by going out on tour and recording the ragged Times Fade Away. Tuscaloosa, recorded before drummer Kenny Buttrey left the Stray Gators, shows a more nuanced side to the story. The first half of the 52-minute plus CD found Neil, solo and with the band, playing mostly straightforward versions of songs he had released. The sixth song, the then unreleased Time Fades Away, showed them shifting into the chaotic mode that Young would employ on the next several albums. All the remaining songs except Alabama were new at the time and featured jagged guitars and off-key vocals. The set concluded with Don't Be Denied, a more or less autobiographical account of NY's journey to stardom. Tuscaloosa is not a great concert, but it finally dispels the myths and mists of time to show that the original Time Fades Away album was a progression and not a daring leap.
