Even if you never saw The Exorcist -- which uses the introductory track to eerie effect -- chances are good you've heard of Mike Oldfield's classic 1973 album Tubular Bells. Fast-forward 30 years: The digital age has arrived, and Oldfield, never fully satisfied with the results on the original album, has completely remade his magnum opus from the ground up, this time using state-of-the-art equipment. Originally recorded when Oldfield was just 19, Tubular Bells is one of the most enduring instrumental records ever made, a prescient collage of widely varied styles and instruments -- all played by Oldfield himself -- that captivates as much for its kaleidoscopic personality as for its playful good humor. The new effort may be a nearly note-for-note re-creation, but it clearly benefits from the "breathtaking capabilities of today's studio technology," as Oldfield asserts, and also enjoys a significant departure from the original: John Cleese steps in to narrate, in his inimitable style, the bizarre instrumental roll-call in the finale to Part One (remember? the instruments are introduced one by one, over an ostinato rhythm). Even with such enhancements, nonplussed fans may question Oldfield's desire to tamper with a classic. "Every time I hear the original version, I hear mistakes," Oldfield counters, yet until now, he was contractually prevented from doing anything about it. Finally, with a sparkling remake under his belt, Oldfield is ready to capture a whole new generation of listeners -- and prove that even for masterpieces, there are second takes.
