Chapter One

First Things First

To understand the way God operates is well beyond our natural way of thinking. I emphasize natural, because we tend to think the way we have been taught and according to the earthly wisdom that we have acquired through our home life, schooling and even religious upbringing. His mercy and plans far surpass anything that we have learned through our own education. We've all read the scripture in Isaiah 56:9 that assure us that "My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts". We've taken those scriptures and run with the idea that the born again believer is still living, thinking and doing according to the unrighteous man, to which these refer. Notice in verse 7 that the wicked and unrighteous man should forsake his ways and thoughts. How should that apply to us today, as sons of God, when Paul clearly judged between the carnal and spiritual man in I Corinthians 2:14-16, "But the natural man receives not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them because they are spiritually discerned. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he shall instruct Him? BUT WE HAVE THE MIND OF CHRIST". It's clear that Paul believes that when we receive the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus that we should be able to receive and know the things of the Spirit of God. His Word is the final authority in heaven and in earth and in us. He is able to do great things in us and through us because we are His sons and daughters. Ephesians 3:20 says: "The action of His power that is at work WITHIN US is able to carry out His purpose and do far over and above all that we dare ask or think (infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes or dreams)". We must first recognize His authority in us and that He uses us to bring about His will on earth. Jesus spoke and taught in the authority of God. We also may and must speak and teach in the authority of God, through Christ Jesus, our Lord. Jesus was speaking to the religious authority in the temple in John 7:16-17 "My teaching is not my own, but Him who sent me and if any man desires to do His will, he will have the needed illumination to recognize, whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking from myself and of my own accord and on my own authority". Those religious people thought He was mad! Jesus said in John 8:28 "I do nothing of myself but as my Father has taught me, I speak these things." Jesus was on earth and living in the authority of God and man. As His children, so we are also, living in the authority of God and man. Why would Jesus teach us to pray for His will to be done on earth, just like it is in heaven if it were impossible? He had power in both realms and so do we.

So, firstly, recognize His authority, His wisdom, His knowledge, His will for us on this earth and His plan to make it happen through us. Acknowledge your son ship and submission to Him, just as Jesus did and allow God to illuminate your mind and spirit. We have tried to do things on our own and never realized that even Jesus himself didn't do things on His own. He received His direction, power, authority and results from the Father. We do also, through Jesus our Lord.

The Apostle Paul recognized and taught that it is God, working inside the faithful believer that accomplishes the task. In Colossians 1:29, Paul acknowledges: "Superhuman energy that God enkindles and works in him". When we come to the realization that it is not us, under our own power, but God, working in and through us that changes lives, we too will exercise our authority in both heaven and earth. Didn't Jesus teach us to pray for His will to be done in earth as in heaven? Matthew 6:10 "Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven". Isn't it His will for all men to be saved? I Timothy 2:4, "Who will have all men to be saved and to come unto the knowledge of the truth". It is with difficulty and far too casual faith, that we reluctantly accept our God given authority to tie the heavenly realm of God's laws to earth and our ability to declare and decree those laws relevant and superior here, but in Matthew 18:18 Jesus grants us the authority of heaven on earth. "Verily I say unto you, whatsoever ye shall bind (to tie) on earth shall be bound (tied) in heaven; and whatsoever ye shall loose (untie, destroy) on earth shall be loosed (untied, destroyed) in heaven."

The keys that He gave us in that same verse are representative of the authority that we have to bind and loose whatever Jesus found lawful to bind and loose. It was no mistake that Jesus granted us this power, but it is a very costly mistake for us not to use it. Believers conduct themselves as if they are dependent upon their own abilities or their power. No, it's not what we can do on our own, but what we will allow Him to do through us. Just as a mentor puts his thoughts into the mind of his student and a teacher puts his thoughts into the mind of a child, Philippians 2:5 says to "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus". Let is a word that implies that it requires our permission. If we let Him, we may hold the very thoughts and mysteries of God, so that He may instruct us! I Corinthians 2:16, "But we have the mind of Christ and do hold the thoughts (feelings and purposes) of His heart."

In Luke 24: 45 when Jesus realized that the disciples didn't understand His words, He opened their understanding so that they might understand the scriptures. He will do the same for each of us who ask Him. We are no different today than they were. We have also become blinded by improper (though well meaning) teaching and have lost the power to understand that His plan was without error and that Christ in us is the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27) or THE HOPE OF GLORY IS IN US. Think on that!

In Chapter 1 of Colossians, Paul flips the switch from the darkness of old understandings to the true revelation of who Jesus really is and what He has done for us and in us. He prays for the church to be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. So today, I also pray for you, that the eyes of your understanding will be opened and that you will be strengthened in His might and see the immeasurable inheritance, adoption and mystery of Christ that is in you right now.

Prayer

Father, I have been blind and without understanding of your ways. Just as Jesus opened the disciples understanding of the scriptures, so I ask you to open my mind that I might experience your power working in me. Help me to lean not to my own understanding, but in all my ways, acknowledge your ways that you may direct me and establish my thoughts. Become more real to me and speak to me more clearly than ever before.

In Jesus name, Amen (I agree with truth)

Chapter Two

Position Yourself

I'd like to begin this chapter by telling you of my own personal experience and how the Holy Spirit taught me this powerful principle. A principle is a comprehensive and fundamental law, doctrine or assumption; a rule or code of conduct; an underlying faculty or endowment. For a further explanation, beyond Webster's definition, it is a foundational doctrine, right from the very heart and plan of God.

There are laws of God, and there are also principles that govern those laws. Even in our own government, laws sometimes become corrupt if they are not governed by principles that cause them to operate properly and bring about the desired result for which the laws were written. We see evidence of laws without foundational principles when our constitution is interpreted without taking into consideration the principles and purpose which governed the very creation of those laws. Without principle, those laws are ineffective in bringing about the desired result. Instead of blessing a nation, without principle, they become weapons in the hands of corrupt men. So it is with the words or laws of God. Without consideration of principle, these laws of God, become legalism that eventually bind and restrict the intent of God to free and bless.

Though I had been in church all my life, I was not born again until I was thirty five years old. Because of the prayers of good friends and a Godly Mother, I received Jesus as my Savior in February 1984. There is a vast difference between going to church and having a personal experience with Jesus Christ. My life did not become the fairy tale that I had dreamed it would and I found myself, seventeen years into a marriage that was spiraling downhill. My husband, who considered himself a "social drinker", found himself bound by alcoholism and the lifestyle that accompanies it. If you have someone close to you that is bound by any mind altering substance, you know exactly what that means. Addiction is never a problem just for the addict, but affects all who care for and want to help them.

In a later chapter, I will detail how I was saved and how the Lord showed me family salvation, but for the purpose of positioning yourself, I'll detail the first time that I actually knew that God spoke directly to me. I had heard people say that God spoke to them but quite frankly, I'm not sure I actually believed that to be a genuine experience, but perhaps a figment of their imagination. Now I know that it is real and the encounter with God that I experienced was like being face to face with someone.

As I sat at my kitchen table, praying for my husband and daughter, I was pointing out to God, all his faults and sins and need for salvation and deliverance and anything else I could think of. Much of my prayer was merely begging for help and a long list of things that I would like for God to change about him. You see, so many times, we become so consumed with the symptoms that a problem produces, that we fail to look for the root of the problem to correct it. Prayer becomes a mere rehearsing of our problems without being willing to look at the source. While praying, it's as if I was stopped right in the middle of a sentence. Perhaps God was tired of hearing it again and knew all that stuff anyway. There was a voice inside of me that shook me to my core and a multitude of understanding came to me in a moment of time. He said very strongly but lovingly, "If you'll get yourself straightened out, I will answer your prayers".

I sat motionless for what seemed like a very long time, startled by what had just happened to me. The understanding of events and my own misconceptions about many things became crystal clear to me. How silly of me to think that God didn't know what I wanted, since I'd told Him so many times. The understanding came to me, that it is very easy for us to see the failings and sins of others, but we are most always blind to our own. It was somewhat like what Paul described in II Corinthians 12:3 when he said, "whether in the body or out of the body, I cannot tell". I couldn't tell you even today, exactly where I was, but I do know that I was in another dimension where there was no time or care about anything. It was as if nothing around me mattered and Jesus was everything. I anxiously waited to hear Him speak to me again. I sat patiently, engulfed in this new place that I had never been before, waiting, but He did not speak. It is very difficult to describe something so spectacular and there are no words in the natural to describe something so spiritual.

Suddenly, inside of me, whether in my mind or spirit, I don't know, I saw an ugly little man parading himself in front of me, carrying a sign. He had a very large head and a very small body. His nose was huge and pointed upward. This may sound very silly, but it was so real that I can still see every detail of him in my mind today. What an impression he made on me! He was a disgusting little character, full of himself and oh, so arrogant. Then, I was able to see something written on the sign that he carried. PRIDE was written in bold letters. Then I knew what pride looked like to God. But could He be telling me that I'm full of pride? Me? I never thought of myself as prideful. Nevertheless, it's hard to argue with the Holy Spirit, so I accepted that as a reflection, a mirror of what was in me. It was so horrible and ugly that I immediately asked God to take it from me and never allow me to be prideful again. This is the understanding I now have about pride. Pride is not what we do, but an attitude that denies our own sins and stands in judgment of any other man. Pride is a worldly, satanic attribute that separates us from the wisdom and ways and heart of God. Pride will not submit to God or His ways, and therefore, cannot resist the devil. I John 2:16 "For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the PRIDE OF LIFE, IS NOT OF THE FATHER BUT IS OF THE WORLD." I had received an instant lesson from God, in a moment of time that would change my life forever. Daniel 5:20 says that pride will harden the mind. For where God was about to take me, it was necessary that my mind and my heart be supple and willing to do things His way. Yielding to the Spirit of God, means letting go of what you think and accept Him at His Word and do His Word, no matter how foolish it seems. In his sermon on Christian Communion, the late John G. Lake states,

"When we examine the human heart and endeavor to discover what it is that retards our progress, I believe we find that pride in the human soul perhaps is the greatest difficulty we have to overcome."

John G. Lake

The soul is the seat of emotions, passions, appetites, desires and feelings. It is our mind, our will and our emotions. It was time for me to position myself at the feet of Jesus and take instruction from The Word of God, be led by the Holy Spirit and cast all my care on Him. This was the only way to see real change in our lives. There was no church tradition, formula or magic bullet that would bring about the total transformation that I was looking for. I didn't want a patch or temporary fix. I wanted to see God for real. I had been trying to "figure it out" and therefore, place my ways above His ways. I had been trying to change my husband. May I tell you that will never work! Immediately, the weight of the world seemed to lift from me and somehow, I just knew that God would take care of me. Little did I know that the coming months would try my faith and patience, waiting on God to change a man's heart. I kept coming back to that wonderful day when God opened my heart that I might see myself. I had built a wall around myself to prevent hurt and appear to the world that all was well. That wonderful day, God freed me from my palace of pride and self preservation to lean totally on Him. Perhaps you too, have not been in position to receive anything from God. Perhaps you have been judgmental of others, not seeing yourself as you are and leaning on your own arm of the flesh. There is hope. The only requirement is to acknowledge your own inability to change anyone, without the power of God in you and give God first place in your life. Be willing to be led by the Holy Spirit and be obedient to every word of God, no matter how foolish it seems. The only limitations on God are the ones you establish. No matter how hopeless your situation may seem, it's not too hard for God. If you are ready to change your life forever, pray with me now.

Prayer

Father, I ask you to forgive me for being quick to see the faults of others and ignore my own. Change me first. Change my heart and soul and put your laws and principles into me that I may fulfill your will for my life. Help me to live free from pride, and positioned that I may know and understand your word and walk in the power of your ways. Lord Jesus, you are before all things in my life. You are the head of this body and in all things you will have first place.

In Jesus name, Amen (I agree with truth)

Chapter Three

The Salvation Experience

I use the word salvation because that is the common phrase used to express being "born again or born from above" which Jesus referred to in John 3:7 "Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again (from above)." Most people outside the church body don't really know what you are talking about. Surprisingly enough, some in the church body don't really know what it means. I believe that using the phrase, "getting saved", limits our understanding of what truly happens to us. When we understand what really happens, we will expect much more, and ultimately, receive more. Jesus paid the ultimate price at Calvary to create a new race of people, unlike any ever seen before. This new "born again" man has a new Father, a new family and a new future. Let's relate this to a natural birth for the purpose of clarity. By God's divine design, when a child is conceived and born, they automatically receive characteristics, traits and attributes of the family into which they are born. The one born has nothing to do with creating those attributes, but everything to do with receiving and living in them.
