'Til the Medicine Takes

by Widespread Panic
6 New & Used Starting at $2.99

Not just a loose-limbed jam band with sprawling solos and shambling boogie rhythms, Athens, Georgia's Widespread Panic have learned as much from Southern Gothic songwriter (and one-time collaborator) Vic Chesnutt as they have from Duane Allman. Old feeling, but dashed with new wave and soul, 'TIL THE MEDICINE TAKES travels a terrain where dense musicianship and eerie evocations work together to infuse a conservative rock aesthetic with wistful ambience and songcraft that, if not exactly tight, certainly doesn't ramble on like lesser examples of jam rock. Rarely do these songs last more than five minutes, and they're almost always propulsive. Throw in a hat-tipping to '90s hip-hop, via the turntable scratching on "Dyin' Man," and you've got a Southern rock band that ain't just whistling Dixie.
