Overview

When Sound of Running Feet first sees white settlers on Nez Perce land, she vows to fight them. She’ll fight all the people trying to steal her people’s land and to force them onto a reservation, including the soldiers with their guns.

But if to fight means only to die, never win, is the fight worth it? When will the killing stop?

Through the eyes of Chief Joseph’s daughter, a brave and independent young woman, Scott O’Dell tells of the tragic defeat of the Nez Perce, a classic tale of cruelty, betrayal, and heroism.

Thunder Rolling in the Mountains is a book about bravery and independence. It is a great story about whites coming west and forcing Native Americans off their land just so they could live in the west. There were a lot of brutal wars, which lead to deaths of a lot of people on both sides. This story is part of the reason why our country is formed and governed in today¿s life. I would recommend this book to everyone that loves a great story especially to people who love adventure stories.

This is the story of the Nez Pierce being driven from their homeland and going to war with the US army, told from the perspective of Chief Joseph's daughter, Sound of Running Feet. We see her tribe struggling to survive as they run from the army and slowly lose their possessions and many lives. Sound of Running Feet eventually strikes off with only her beloved to try to escape to Canada.

I loved this book! I thought it gave an interesting historical view. I really liked that the book put a lot of detail into the native american culture. i also liked this book because from growing up in the Northwest I could identify places in the book, for example my parents used to take us camping at Wallowa Lake in Oregon, wich is where Sound of Running Feet's tribe's original home was. This is a book I would recommend to children in upper elementary school

I did not realize that this was a true story. I love these stories about the indians. I always learn so very much. This is a sad story but then most of the indian stories are. Quick and easy read. Great for all ages.

My 5th grade, 11 year old son, just had to read this book and do an essay/poster project for class. I read the book in order to help him with the essay part of the project and I have to say that while the book is okay as a story, I strongly feel it is very inappropriate for children. I love to read and I own hundreds of books and I must say that this was a bit graphic. I understand teaching children about Native American history and I know all too well that these things really did happen. However, I feel that this book went into too much detail about the killings than I prefer my 11 year to read. I do not even allow him to watch movies or tv shows when there is this type of violence and I also do not allow him to own or play video games with this content either. There is a reason why there are age ratings on things and I definitely plan to discuss this with his school when he returns from Easter break. If I as a 34 year old can read this book and cry half the time, then this should have been brought to the parents' attention before being handed out to the children. Again, the story is good and it definitely kept me focused, but I do not feel it is an appropriate book for children.

The "Thunder Rolling in the Mountains" By: Scott O'Dell And Elizabeth Hall, was an okay historical fiction book. It was not as bad as I thought it would be. I didn¿t really like at all at first because of the way the cover looked but when my eye balls met the pages of that book they didn¿t come off until I has distracted my something, trust me. I did like it because for some odd reason I like reading about wars. The girl, sounds of running feet tried to get married and goes into war with the English, but many people died. They had described many interesting things in this book that really was an eye catcher. There were emotional parts in this story like when the young 14 yr. old girl's family got kicked of their land because they had too much. All i have to say is that that little girl is so brave. But what really amazed me is when she survived with the children of the Nez Perce and the sister.
There was a lot of man vs. man conflict in this book, because stuff with the war and the English. This book made me feel very sad at in some of the chapters. The protagonist was the person that I paid more attention to because knew what a protagonist is now so i was waiting for her to change. I would think that since this book relied on independence would say this book would be good for not only teens because the young girl was very brave and can set examples for many children but adults also.

This is an awesome book. It is about a girl, sound of running feet that tries to marry and goes into war with the blue coats (the english). It shows how she survives with the children of the nez perce and her sister. I would recommend this book to any child.

This is a great book by Scott O'Dell and his wife Elizabeth Hall. The title of the book makes sence in that 'Thunder Rolling in the Mountains' is one of the names of Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce Indians. The story line is the troubles that Chief Joseph's daughter and her tribe face in being moved by the government in the late 1800's. I liked this book because it didn't leave out parts that were a bit gruesome, therefore giving it a real quality. It also led you into the next chapter and was very well written. Four stars!!
