David Ball is the son of a Baptist preacher man, but he sings as if his personal holy trinity is Hank, Lefty, and Possum. There's not a lot of variety in his music, but if you're a honky-tonk purist like Ball, you want your songs of cheatin', drinkin', and lovin' straight, no chaser. The title track is a rather painful pun ("Yes, I admit I've got a thinkin' problem..."), but his witticisms improve on tracks like "Blowin' Smoke" ("I say I've burned her memory/But I'm just blowin' smoke") and "Honky-Tonk Healin'," wherein he claims, "It took some neon nurses around the clock to pull me through." Ball plays the sensitive '90s guy on ballads such as "When the Thought of You Catches Up with Me" and "12-12-84," but it's his wisecracking ways that show him in the best light. Ball is a terrific singer and songwriter whose work has been overlooked for too long.
