Overview
With this disc, Lil' Cease -- the notorious protégé of Biggie Smalls and key member of B.I.G.'s Junior M.A.F.I.A. crew -- drops his highly anticipated debut. On hand are Cease's infectious sandpaper vocals, backed by ultraslick versions of the ghetto-fabulous grooves pioneered by Biggie and Puffy and beefed up by VIP cameos from Busta Rhymes ("More Dangerous"), Mase ("Girlfriend"), and Jay-Z ("4 My Niggas"). The album's best song, "Play Around," features soaring vocals from Harve Pierre (who performed similar duties on Black Rob's hit "I Dare You"). Still, this may not be the wonderful hip-hop world Cease's fans were hoping for. Part of the problem lies in the use of all-too-familiar production sounds: "No Stopping Us" bites the same great disco hit that underpinned Big Daddy Kane's "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now," "Supa Ho" borrows from Boogie Down Productions and Timbaland hits, and even "Everything," Cease's sincere tribute to B.I.G., gets trapped in middle-of-the-road sonic mores. Fans are sure to snap this album up no matter its shortcomings, but let's hope Lil' Cease explores more original worlds on his next outing.
