A design-forward cookbook for sweet and savory baked goods from London's popular Violet Bakery that focuses on quality ingredients, seasonality, and taste (as opposed to science) as the keys to creating satisfying, delightful homemade pastries, tarts, sweets, and more.
Violet is a jewel box of a cake shop and café in Hackney, east London. The baking is done with simple ingredients including whole grain flours, less refined sugars, and the natural sweetness and nuanced hues of seasonal fruits. Everything is made in an open kitchen for people to see. Famed for its exquisite baked goods, Violet has become a destination.
Owner Claire Ptak uses her Californian sensibility to create recipes that are both nourishing and indulgent. With a careful eye to taste and using the purest ingredients, she has created the most flavorful iterations of classic cakes, as well as new treats for modern palates. Over 100 recipes include nourishing breakfasts, midday snacks, desserts to share, fruit preserves, and stylish celebration cakes.
This book is about making baking worth it: simple to cook and satisfying to eat.

I received this lovely vintage British-inspired cookbook as a birthday present, and I'm so glad I did! The recipes range from birthday cakes to small tea-time snacks, to cookies and quiches. I have made several recipes from Violet and they have all turned out beautifully! Some of her measurements seem a bit off, in that I sometimes find I have a lot of batter or dough left when I should have had just enough, but that isn't a big deal. She does a great job of providing all measurements in metric and standard units, so no matter what system you use you'll be fine. One thing I love is that she never goes too sweet; all of her recipes for the most part are pretty conservative with the sugar, which I like because so many other recipes go overboard on the sugar. Claire's recipes have a subtle sweetness, which is really nice. You can tell the care that went into all of these recipes, and it shows in the finished product. Overall, a great cookbook for all bakers. I'd say a little baking experience helps with these recipes, but its not entirely essential. This book makes a great gift and it has a wide range of recipes, from savory to sweet, to tease your baking fantasies! A lovely, well-rounded baking book with some simple information on techniques, too.
