Reviewed by Karen Pirnot for Readers' Favorite The Very Fairy Princess is the latest in the Princess series by Julie Andrews and Emma Walton Hamilton. It is beautifully illustrated by Christine Davenier and the colorful pictures help to facilitate the understanding of the story for younger children. Geraldine believes herself to be a true princess, complete with appropriate dress and well-rehearsed attitude! It is time for the Winter Wonderland Festival at Geraldine's school and she believes she will surely be chosen to sing a lead role in the school concert. She rehearses daily with friends in front of the music instructor and, at other times, when the instructor is busy with his own work. When the role is given to a guest performer, Geraldine is devastated. Geraldine's family attempts to console her and gradually Geraldine learns to accept disappointment. Just when the Princess is about to accept becoming a "commoner," a surprise pops up to change everything. Authors Andrews and Hamilton are a mother-daughter team who know how to write for children. The Very Fairy Princess will capture the interest of preschool children and those in the early elementary years. It stimulates the imagination and teaches life lessons such as moving toward one's hopes and dreams and handling disappointment along the way. The book helps young children to remain motivated in the face of seeming defeat and then, to perform gracefully once opportunity strikes again. The illustrations in the book are captivating. There are words of wisdom that sneak into the motivational dilemmas faced by most children. The book would make a wonderful holiday gift for one's children or grandchildren.
