3.5* A story of how love and trust and partnership can renew lost hopes and dreams. Secrets and lies weigh heavily on our hero and heroine. Tragic events have changed everything, futures they once dreamed of are no longer insight. Lucas Vincent, “The Undercover Duke” Duke of Willowby, separated himself from family and through the years friends being a spy for the crown. Recently severely injured Lucas is left in terrible pain and guilt ridden from the friend he could not save, Dr. William Oakford. His superiors need to keep him hidden but with their best healer dead they turn to the next best person Diana Oakford, William’s daughter. Diana’s mother passed when she was young all she had was her father, he raised her the only way he knew, to be a healer. Several years ago her heart was broken and her life changed forever. She put away her hopes and dreams and focused on her plants and herbs. The last thing Diana wants to do is help the people who took her father away for so much of her life. When she’s told its The Undercover Duke, a man her father talked of like a son she could not turn him away. Lucas is surly and rude and in such horrible pain that he’s unable to move about much with out help. When Lucas realizes who Diana is he’s swamped with guilt and demands to leave not wanting to drag her into this mess. They strike up a deal, a month of doing what Diana thinks will help then he can leave. Their attraction is instant but neither want a relationship but can’t seem to resist each other. As the days go by Lucas gets stronger and their relationship grows to friendship and trust. Lucas gives Diana on thing that she’s never had, to make her own decisions and choices. Can they count on each other when they need each other the most or will old hurts and secrets get in their way? There are some great twists and turns that I did not see coming. I love Jess Michaels writing a story telling.

Lucas Vincent, Duke of Willowby, has been injured during a mission and has almost died. It has been six months and he still hasn't healed. Diana Oakford has been trained by her father, who is a doctor for the War Dept. She is asked to step in and see if she can help Lucas. What great characters, they are so believable and vivacious. The plot is complicated, there are all kinds of twists to this story. There is danger, intrigue, and lies. I really enjoyed their first kiss and how it affected both of them. Lucas, she finds him very masculine, sexy and hard to keep her eyes off him. I am so glad I got a chance to read this book and look forward to more of the author's work. I received this ARC free and voluntarily reviewed it.

Not my favorite of the series, but I don't really like the spy plots much anyway. I like the series overall, but now it's starting to get confusing with so many dukes around. Will definitely keep buying, just hope the rest are more interesting.

After having lost her father a few months ago, Diane Oakford had been living a quiet life. In The Undercover Duke, however, things are about to change dramatically. Receiving a visit from the Earl of Stalwood, spymaster to the War Department, she is recruited to aid in the healing of a man injured in the same mission that killed her father. Lucas Vincent, the Duke of Willowby, was a spy for the crown. Severely injured on a mission, he is in pain and not used to inactivity. His short temper and irritability are quickly apparent when he first meets Diane and realizes it is she who will be caring for him. Trained by her father, Diane is a gifted healer. Lucas needs a healer of a class better than the ones who have been treating him thus far. He is very different from the man she imagined when she had been told about the Undercover Duke by her father. For one thing, he’s a very handsome man. Lucas feels responsible for her father’s death. Diane feels that his death on the same mission which injured Lucas is more reason to help. She does not want her father’s death to be in vain. Romance With A Touch Of Mystery This story, another of The 1797 Club series, is a good standalone read. The author has done in an exceptional job of bringing the two characters together from very different backgrounds. They also work together to solve the mystery of who it was who betrayed the mission. I do like a sense of mystery in the book in this one provides a surprising answer. Author, Jess Michaels, is definitely one that I will keep an eye on while I am looking out for more 1797 Club books. Reviewed for LnkToMi iRead in response to a complimentary copy of the book provided by the publisher in hopes of an honest review.

I loved Lucas and Diana's story!! Lucas as lived with the guilt of getting Diana's father killed for months. When she ends up being the healer that is to take care of him and they find they have a mutual attraction, he is even more conflicted than he was. As Lucas starts to heal, they get even closer. But that all changes when Lucas gets close to finding the traitor that tried to killed him all those months ago. Will finding out the truth ruin the relationship that Diana and Lucas have developed? I really enjoyed both Lucas and Diana. Their attraction for each other instantaneous, but I loved watching it turned into someone so much more. It was also nice to see some of the other Dukes and their ladies!! I'm so excited for the next book in the series which stars the Duke of Tyndale!

Jess Michaels has a way of snaring the readers attention from the first and not letting go until the end. The wounded hero trope is my very favorite because I love to seem them healed and happy in the end. This story had it in spades. Lucas Vincent, the Duke of Willowby at a very young age, has done everything he can to avoid the Dukedom and has worked as a spy for the War Department. Terribly unhappy in his life he fights like he doesn't care if he gets killed and maybe he doesn't. Unfortunately he was gravely wounded in the field and has been sent home to heal. His injuries were grave and he was sent Diana Oakford, whose father, a physician in the war, had died when Lucas was wounded. Two lost souls brought together seems fated and it does not take long for their mutual attraction. But nothing is ever simple when secrets and a mystery get in the way and try to pull the couple apart. This is part of a series that I have not read but I think a lot of the characters in past stories showed up in this one. This can be read as a standalone although I am anxious to read the entire series. If you love historical romance with a little steam, this one if for you and I cannot wait to read the next book by this author! Lori D.

Ten teens at boarding school form a club to assist one another as they grow into their positions of being dukes one day - The 1797 Club - this series is already plotted out to have ten volumes starring the ten original members of the club. Over the years a bond stronger and closer, in some ways, than that of blood brothers is formed. In each book of the series we find out what has become of the members of the club and who they will find their HEA with. In book six we meet Lucas Vincent, Duke of Willowby, the youngest member of the 1797 club. After learning something that rocked his world he left for the military, became a spy and avoided family and friends for around a decade. As the story begins he is spying, wounded and is not healing as he should so is sent to Diana Oakford, daughter of the recently deceased Spymaster’s main surgeon, to see if she can work some magic and make him well. Lucas is in pain and not the nicest person to be around but in spite of that he is a gentleman, wants to get better so he agrees to let Diana treat his wounds for a month. Of course Lucas and Diana are attracted to one another and feel some sizzle so with eyes open wide they agree to engage in a tryst. As is so often true, trysts can engender feelings, sharing and caring. Eventually they begin to work together to uncover who the traitor in the midst of the spies might be and in so doing expose...more than they might have wished to. So many secrets! So many twists and turns! So much fun to read! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. It is not your common garden variety of historical romance but instead has interesting and intriguing main characters that really made an impact on me. I am eager to read what comes next and have to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and am glad there are several more books to read before it finishes. Thank you to the author who bequeathed me an ARC through NetGalley – This is my honest review. 4 – 5 Stars

Jess Michaels is a smooth operator. She tempts with romance and delivers so much more. The Undercover Duke begins with a mystery. Lucas has many secrets that just might get him killed. When his double life leaves him at his most vulnerable, he finds an angel in Diana. Diana is a fearless woman with a healing hand and her own baggage to bear. Diana and Lucas walk a fine line between love and lust as they try to stay a step ahead of the danger that stalks them. Ms. Michaels stories are alluring tales of courage that never get old.
