The Story of My Life

The Story of My Life

by Deana CarterDeana Carter

It wouldn't be a Deana Carter album if there weren't some personal drama behind it. So it is with The Story of My Life, on which Carter takes an assertive role in songwriting, production, and musicianship. Both intimate and expansive, the songs capture Carter's reflections on her life's journey as she assesses the fallout from a failed relationship and questions her own values. The wisdom her parents and trusted friends imparted along the way is the philosophical foundation for "One Day at a Time," a slinky, lubricious amalgam of folk-style storytelling and R&B grooves. Churning and sludgy, "Ordinary" looks back at a life lived all-out and, with guitars howling, exults in seizing the moment anew, with Carter's husky, bluesy vocal soaring in the choruses and affecting a seductive whisper at other points. Trying to hold on while trying to let go is the yin-yang informing a Bread-influenced ballad, "In a Heartbeat," which is energized near its close by a fierce, George Harrison–style lead guitar solo by Carter's brother Jeff. Moody and ethereal, "Atlanta & Birmingham" leads off a triptych of incisive accounts of a breakup that includes the folk-rock of "She's Good for You" (featuring a surprising, Beatles-like instrumental interlude) and an acoustic-based torch song, "Not Another Love Song," on which Carter, in a delicate vocal, mourns the lost cause her love life has become. In the spacey ballad "Sunny Day," she kisses off, in no uncertain terms, a label executive who dissed her, subsequently reaffirming her commitment to her music as a form of salvation. Guess who has the last laugh? The Story of My Life is a tour de force of inspired artistry in multiple dimensions.
