The Spirit Room

The Spirit Room

by Michelle Branch

Overview

You have to keep reminding yourself that 2001 newcomer Michelle Branch is only 17 years old when listening to her worthy pop
ock debut The Spirit Room. The 11-track set showcases this precocious artist on guitar (electric and acoustic) and a substantial vocal presence that blends innocence, passion, vulnerability, yearning, intensity, and tenderness all in one voice. She also has a knack for crafting melodic vocal leads, which further define her infectious sound. However, what truly shines through are the young musician's lyrics -- she handles much of the songwriting -- which are some of the most open, simple, and idealistic ruminations on love to drop in 2001. It's no surprise that the disc's first single release, the lively and heartfelt "Everywhere" -- with its electric-guitar power chords, spirited vocal delivery, and catchy chorus -- spread like wildfire on the radio. Elsewhere, the sugary mid-tempo rock ballad "You Get Me" is an endearing and clever spin on the romantic pairing of two misfits. There's nothing more fulfilling and powerful than having the unconditional understanding, acceptance, and love of another, particularly for those a bit "left of center," as the song explains, and Branch well captures the essence of this life treasure. The album's most captivating moment is the mesmerizing "Drop in the Ocean," which, to be sure, symbolizes Branch's Spirit Room. On it her voice, backed by slow and building synth chords, departs from its usual energetic sound and becomes throaty, deep, and ethereal. And Branch's lyrics -- "Love took me by the hand/love took me by surprise/love led me to you/and love opened up my eyes/I was drifting away like a drop in the ocean, now I realize/that nothing has been as beautiful as when I saw heaven's skies/in your eyes" -- take the musical depiction of love to a spiritual level, and that doesn't happen often in contemporary pop
ock, particularly not by a 17 year old. Of note is producer John Shanks' (Stevie Nicks, Melissa Etheridge, and BBMak, among others) great mix; textured backing vocals and overdubs, and a creative use of drum machines, modern beat sounds, and turntables set to a backdrop of rock music, puts a fresh spin on the genre. No doubt, Branch is an artist with a bright future, and that's lucky for music listeners. She has enough spirit to fill not just one room, but many.

I'm SO glad to see that Michelle isn't one of those people who go around dyeing their hair, lip-syncing, and pretending to be someone they're not. Michelle doesn't have to do complicated dance steps, look totally sexy and wear practically no clothes (Britney Spears *ahem*), and go around showing off. I'm glad she's writing her own songs! Her songs make me feel great after a long hard day at school and even during school, I sing it to myself! My friends all think I'm obsessed, but I know the truth: Be yourself and you can have a successful career without the media trying to make it sound bad (*ahem* Britney again, making headlines in all the magazines *ahem*) My favorite track is You Get Me. AND! Michelle Branch's You Set Me Free will be in the movie ''Spirit'' opening at the end of May! If I could, I would rate this entire album a total 11 out of 10! Buy it today and make your sad CD collection finally complete! ;)

this cd is better then any other this year. with the 3 hit singels "all you wanted" good-bye to you" and "everywhere" this cd would make a great bithday present. in a world of britany's, and belly's that show, michelle proves that you don't have to bare your tummy to be liked. and unlike most cd's michelle doesn't have any "filler song." all of her lyrics, are thought out, and the melodies are always enjoyable. so if you love a cd with a girl who can really sing, write her own songs, and play guitar, i encourage you to buy this cd.

It all started when I saw Michelle Branch's video on TRL. I knew I had to check out her CD, so I bought it, and immediately fell in love with her music! She is such a talented musician (ex. she plays guitar and writes her own music). This CD is for those who are tired of the pre-manufactured pop that we've come to live with, and are ready for some REAL music. I highly recommend you buy this CD right away!

In a world where pop artists are so similar that they seem to be manufactured on an assembly line, Michelle Branch is a refreshing change of pace. Her music isn't decidedly pop, and it's not rock...it's not anything. It's just hers, her style. And what an excellent style it is. First of all, I need to say that Michelle Branch is an excellent guitar player, which definitely contributes quite a bit to her music. Skill, however, isn't all it takes to be successful in the music world. You also need to be able to come up with deep lyrics and put them to catchy tunes. Michelle Branch is excellent at both. An great example is the song "Here With Me" (track 6). The chorus: "I know you had to go away, I died just a little and I feel that now you're the one I need. I believe that I would cry just a little just to have you back now, here with me." Those powerful lyrics, combined with the tune of them...the end result is a song that could make the happiest person in the world call up their doctor asking for some Prozac...and in a world where there are so many songs out there that are about as deep as shallow puddle, I just have to say again that this quality that Michelle Branch has is a refreshing change.

I first heard of Michelle on TRL and I just totally got hooked on ''Everywhere''. After listening to ''Everywhere'' 20 times a day, I decided to get her album. I'm very impressed with it. I have to say that there hasn't been a cd that I've gotten where I've liked all of the songs but this is it; I've been a total fan ever since. YOU ROCK MICHELLE!

Michelle's lyrics are filled with honesty that it even hit me straight in the heart. Having bought her CD "The Spirit Room" inspired me and also my songwriting skills.. I've been writing songs with much more honesty than usual...she deserves a lot of appreciation! Plus! she influenced me in also learning the guitar...so I guess, she's a very big inspiration...she taught me how to sing, play and write just how I feel.

In a world of push-up bras, baring midriffs, and getting hair extensions is to be expected, Michelle Branch knows that that's not what it takes to become liked. What I like most about her is that she has her own style and doesn't go along with the rest of the fake pop diva's such as Britney and Christina. Her songs are about real life situations and are well coordinated. My personal favorites "All You Wanted" and "Everywhere" are meaningful and well sang.I've had this cd for almost a year and i play it everyday. It's one of those cd's that you just can't get tired of. It's my favorite cd ever. You rock Michelle! I can't wait until her next one comes out!

Absolutely Gripping!! thank yoU thanK YOU THANK YOU!! Thank God for gifting this artist so much! This artist is spectacular with every note which massages the very essence of my soul, her combination of girlish melodies contrasting with dirty, yet warm tube elec.guitar, Inescapable hooks create a lively passion of music that comes once in a great while. The rollercoaster emotions of her voice and harmony create excitement along with the beauty of her voice, which never grows stale. It gets better each time you listen to it. This singer is also unchoreographed, writes her own music. Believe me, it is a big deal. The way you ¿feel¿ the music here is again, GRIPPING! I read a lot of reviews on her, and she seems humble, not comparing herself to the glory of popstars, but she gives noteworthy credit to the dancing ability of the popstars. I have waiting for an artist like this, where each note is soothing and energizing. She is now my favorite musician/singer. This artist deserves ¿Breakthrough artist of the year¿! If you want and artist who tells ¿real¿ love stories from her own heart, without the pre-fab production, this album is a must buy! P.S. Thanks Madonna for signing her, Thank you O¿ Great Mother of GOD! I know, a little Melodramatic.

I heard Michelle's single, ''Everywhere'' and bought the album the next day. I listened to every song on the album and it is already my favorite. I can't say that I've ever been this excited about music before. She has a powerful talent that is so worthy of attention. If this is her debut album, I'm definitely interested in what else she has coming. As time will prove, Michelle Branch is a true artisit.

I loved all of the songs except one the only thing i didn't like was that she needs some songs that you can dance to. But that is ok because i love her lyrics and i love singing and dancing.
