Overview

Memphis Slim paid his dues pounding the piano in dancehalls, juke joints, and turpentine camps in the '30s, but by the '50s he had developed a style that was as at home at a debutante party as in a backstreet dive. THE REAL FOLK BLUES is a set of Slim's recordings for the Premium label and features the pianist with small combos and on occasion back-up vocalists. The set is seamless, ranging from the late-night sophistication of "I Guess I'm a Fool" to the rowdier, swingin' "Trouble Trouble." Slim's timeless signature tune, "Mother Earth," is also included. The only misstep here is the title, which is a bit of misnomer considering Slim's smooth, velvety vocals, which harken back to an era when blues and jazz were melding into rhythm and blues.
