The influence of the gothic and its atmosphere of gloom and decay have inspired classics of horror and the supernatural for more than two centuries. The Phantom of the Opera and Other Gothic Tales collects twenty-five classic stories shaped by gothic’s mood of menace and the macabre. In addition to the world-famous title novel, about a “ghost” who terrorizes the personnel of the Paris Opera House, the book includes Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto, the book that launched the gothic novel craze, as well as stories by H. P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Shelley, Arthur Machen, Louisa May Alcott, E. T. A. Hoffmann, J. Sheridan Le Fanu, and Vernon Lee.
The Phantom of the Opera and Other Gothic Tales is one of Barnes & Noble's Collectible Editions classics. Each volume features authoritative texts by the world's greatest authors in an exquisitely designed bonded-leather binding, with distinctive gilt edging and a ribbon bookmark. Decorative, durable, and collectible, these books offer hours of pleasure to readers young and old and are an indispensable cornerstone for every home library.

Note: I am rating the quality of this edition rather than the quality of the stories and translation(s). This is a gorgeous leatherbound edition that is great for collectors, however, I would suggest a different edition of The Phantom of the Opera for a reading copy - especially for new readers. Many unfortunately do not realize there are different translations of Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera and often go for the cheapest option they can find, which is generally a translation by Alexander de Mattos; the earliest and one of the more flawed translations, simply because the translation is not in copyright. de Mattos unfortunately condenses a fair deal of material in his translation. For first time readers I would recommend Mireille Ribière's (Penguin Classics) or David Coward's translations (Oxford World's Classics), both of which are available here on Barnes and Noble. The other stories included are the following: -The Vampyre by John Polidori -The Transformation by Mary Shelley -The Sandman by E.T.A. Hoffman -Somnambulism: A Fragment by Charles Brockden Brown -The Castle of Otranto: A Gothic Story by Horace Walpole -Metzengerstein by Edgar Allan Poe -Rappaccini's Daughter by Nathaniel Hawthorne -Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu -Olalla by Robert Louis Stevenson -The Withered Arm by Thomas Hardy -The Abbot's Ghost, or, Maurice Treherne's Temptation by Louisa May Alcott Marsyas in Flanders by Vernon Lee The Dead Smile by F. Marion Crawford The De Grabrooke Monument by Mrs. J.H. Riddell The Family of a Vourdalak by Aleksey Tolstoy The Spider by Hanns Henz Ewers Execution by M. Y. Halidom The Great God Plan by Arthur Machen The House of Sounds by M. P. Shiel The Secret of the Growing Gold by Bram Stoker\ In the Court of the Dragon by Robert W. Chambers Sister Maddelena by Ralph Adams Cram The Ghost of Mohammad Din by Clark Ashton Smith The Rats in the Walls by H.P. Lovecraft
