About the Author

Sarah Ballantyne, Ph.D., earned her doctorate degree in medical biophysics at the age of 26. She spent the next four years doing research on innate immunity and inflammation before becoming a stay-at-home mom. After her second daughter was born, she began to experiment with the Paleo lifestyle. It had an amazing effect on her health.

Over time, she healed herself of a long laundry list of physical complaints including irritable bowel syndrome, allergies, and the autoimmune disorder, Lichen Planus, an inflammatory skin condition. Inspired by her success, Dr. Ballantyne created the popular health blog and became co-host of a top-rated podcast, The Paleo View. Her passion for providing straightforward explanations of the science behind her diet and lifestyle recommendations for managing autoimmune disease, plus her love of food and cooking as well as her conviction that healing your body does not have to come at the expense of enjoying food, form the foundations of The Paleo Approach and The Paleo Approach Cookbook.

This is by far my favorite paleo cookbook to date! It's full of useful kitchen tips and tricks, explains the ins and outs of following the auto-immune protocol, has clear rules and guidelines, and is jammed with hundreds of recipes - plus each recipe has at least one variant! There are full color pictures for each recipe, and color illustrations throughout the more theoretical parts as well. This is a great cookbook, but moreover it's a great resource for paleo and AIP eaters!

I found this book a really interesting resource for following the autoimmune protocol. As well as the recipes (there are around 150) there are suggestions on how to alter them if you follow a low FODMAP diet, as well as money saving and batch-cooking tips. One of my favourite recipes from the book was the sardine salad - quick to prepare, cheap and really nutritious!

I thought I knew a lot about healthy eating and cooking great recipes from a variety of vegetables, but WOW! did I find a lot of things I didn't know and vegetables/fruit I'd never encountered in the stores. I'm looking forward to trying many new and interesting things. Great cookbook. I have both books, and find them essential to my life.

This book is an excellent resources for anyone that wants to implement the Autoinmune Paleo Protocol into their life. You will get everything you need to know to start right away, which is so great. When I got the book I was surprised at how well the meal plans and shopping lists were put together, Sarah made it so easy for me which I really appreciate since I don't have time to plan my meals. Highly recommended if you want to give the Autoinmune Protocol a try! Great companion for the Paleo Approach book which is another masterpiece!

This cookbook is beautiful, practical and every details seems well thought out and intentional. With kitchen staples, soups, meats, seafood, offal and desserts, there honestly is something for everyone. The best part being how approachable each recipe is. All of the recipes truly are practical, simple to follow and look delicious! There are a lot of different kinds of people who will love this cookbook. 1. For anyone following the autoimmune protocol, The Paleo Approach Cookbook is a must. Even with the tons of blogs and recipes available these days, you want this cookbook. You’ll know what to eat to feel your best, and how to make it. Even if you don’t feel well, most of the recipes are simple to make. With short ingredient lists, easy to read instructions and a meal plan, you or your loved one won’t feel stressed trying to follow this way of eating. 2. Anyone who wants to learn how to cook with real food. Before you even reach the recipes, Sarah has packed a wealth of information into her cookbook. Everything including how to buy and store your ingredients, what kitchen tools to use, and how to plan for success in the kitchen. 3. People who are trying to incorporate more nose-to-tail or nutrient dense eating into their lives. You don’t have to be a nose to tail eater to love this cookbook, but Sarah gives you the option with an entire section dedicated to offal. That way, you finally know what to make with that pound of beef liver, kidney or heart that’s been in your freezer for who knows how long. Not just make it, but make into a meal that both looks and tastes delicious! This book is a must whether following the protocol or not.

This book has changed my life.  Recently diagnosed with MS and i am determined to beat this disease by doing everything i can.  This book is clear/cut with simple recipes that dont require spending tons of money on recipes.  Other books require extensive ingredients but this one DOES NOT! This will change your life if you follow the protocol and you will feel better! promise!

This book is EXTREMELY helpful! Many of the recipes are somewhat complicated, but many more work for someone with limited time. I can't thank Sarah enough for getting this cookbook out to those struggling with autoimmune's a lifesaver - maybe literally! Personally, even the more difficult recipes may be possible for me to try in the future - eating well should be life-long!

The recipes here are great! Yes, if you are truly determined to heal yourself from autoimmune diseases, then both Sarah and Dr Terry Wahls will tell you to east offal. I HATE it, but I do it because I am WORTH IT! I want more to be healthy again and feel good than I do to eat the Southern cooking I love. She recommends expensive things, but her Paleo Approach book also gives recommendations of how to eat with less expensive items. It, for me, became a "put on your big girl panties" thing and I just poured myself into what she is teaching. I don't regret it for one second.

The recipes in this book are wonderful. I love trying new, healthy, clean foods and this book doesn't disappoint. I'm new to the Autoimmune world and I couldn't survive w/o Sarah (The Paleo Mom). The wonton soup alone, is totally worth this book.

This is a not just any cookbook. it also contain a wealth of information, great pictures, and even a nutritional  analysis of every dish. some state that some of the recipes are too complicated. Cooking healthy takes more time and planning . Ingredients that may seem weird to some are use daily by others.

This book is so useful for those just starting out and those who need to spice up their normal routine.  So much information and well placed.  The pictured food index is one of my favorites, I love looking at the photos and choosing what I want to make by what looks appealing to me!

I cannot recommend this book highly enough for anyone that has been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. I've made a recipe just about every day since it arrived; I already follow the autoimmune protocol and consider myself "in my element" in the kitchen, but I love trying new recipes. While I'm no novice with liver, kidneys, heart, or tongue; I do enjoy branching out and trying new things; so I bought tripe and trotters! Yes, Sarah is backing up my opinion that offal ain't awful! I love that she breaks down the nutrients quite specifically, offers thorough notes on FODMAP modifications, and gives a fantastic meal plan to help those that are just starting their healing journey or for those of us that could use a little inspiration. ~ Erin at Enjoying this Journey

Absolutely love this cookbook.  The layout is wonderful, the photos colorful,  and the recipes are delicious.  After following the Auto Immune Protocol for over a year, I was definitely ready for new, more in depth, flavor recipes, and Sarah definitely did not fail.  Her recipes vary from every day ingredients in some recipes to the very unique in others.   I've already put several recipes to the test and have not been disappointed.  This is definitely going to be a cookbook I go to often.

I've never had a cookbook that gave you so much nutritional detail as Sarah's. I love all the recipes she has for offal. As a child, we use to eat much more of that in my house but as I grew older, that seemed to fall out of favor. Her hidden liver meatloaf is one of my favorites. It's tasty and nutritious and you'd never guess there was liver in it. She has also introduced me to all the ways you can use plantains. I never realized what a versatile fruit this is.

I've been going through The Paleo Approach Cookbook since it arrived. I pre-ordered it as soon as I bought the first book, The Paleo Approach. I have been very excited to get it after reading the first book. I wanted a cookbook that would give me some ideas since this way of cooking is new and different. It certainly does give lots of ideas. I love to cook, and I love food! So, I knew that I would have to make recipes that are both delicious and nutritious. It's nice to know I can. Also, if you are creative with your cooking like me, you will find that you don't always have to rely on these recipes, but you can alter them as you like as long as you are staying within the bounds of the paleo approach recommendations. So, it's kind of been like a whole new adventure cooking with new and different things and learning how it will turn out. I'll admit that like another reader, I've not been brave enough to seek out cricket flour or make it, but as Sarah says, you don't have to make everything if you don't like it. I still have some searching to do to find sources for things like lard, or unrendered pastured pork fat so I can make it. I have found some pastured lard online, but I want to see if I can't find some that I can render myself through our farmer's market or perhaps online. Also, I'll say that the staples, shopping lists, snacks etc from this book are really nice to have. I look at a lot of recipes online, but having a real book with pictures and lots of info and detail at my fingertips really suits me. I can't wait to make some more recipes from this book. I've already made three of them, and was pleasantly surprised with the results.
