Alexandra Lombardo should have been overjoyed at the prospect of a summer spent at her grandmother's bucolic Maine home. However, it wasn't the allure of the rocky coastline and days spent lounging with the family that brought Alex and her mother to Maine.

It was death.

The sudden passing of her father, catapults Alex into a world of heartache and uncertainty. When Alex arrives at her grandmother's house, she finds that apart from the peculiar forest behind the home, not much has changed in the few years since her last visit.

As grief isolates Alex from her mother, she finds herself battling new terrifying nightmares alone. Marcella, a glamorous and wealthy old friend of her father's, steps in and takes Alex under her wing. While Marcella offers Alex a much-needed distraction from her grief, Alex is still unable to get the mysterious forest behind her grandmother's home out of her mind.

It is there she discovers the Fae of Sapphirus – who claims to be there for her protection – and a strange, ageless magic within her. The Fae reveal to Alex that there are other realms apart from her human world. They tell her of a centuries-old war the Sapphireans have been waging against their enemy realm, Calaster. Alex discovers that she is in great danger. Only the Fae have the power to protect her, but in exchange she must pledge her allegiance Sapphirus and aid them in their war.
