THE NEW SCREENWRITER'S SURVIVAL GUIDE: No one had ever won the world's two hottest amateur screenwriting awards - The Nicholl Fellowship from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and the Austin Film Festival screenwriting award - in a single week. No one else had ever sold three pitches back to back over the Christmas weekend. And almost no one else had ever made her first sale as a complete unknown from outside California - and gone on to get it produced starring the then hottest young actress in Hollywood. People just don't do that. But Max Adams did. From guerrilla meeting tactics to finding (and firing) your agent, from maintaining "voice" to pitching and getting paid, the screenwriter crowned "red hot" by Variety who has been there, done that, and lived to talk about it tells you how to sell and get your screenplay made. And, more importantly, stay alive and successful for a long time afterward.

The New Screenwriter's Survival Guide is crushingly, refreshingly honest. It brings a chuckle and a cringe in the same sentence and never fails to entertain. The insight into what the movie world is really like is a bit frightening, but appreciated (when I make it there, maybe I'll be a bit prepared, sigh). Max is an amazing teacher (I am completely qualified to say that after eight classes with her), and she doesn't let down here. She tells it as it is. This is information worth retaining.

Generally, I'm not a big reader of help guides. Why? Because I'm not always sure it's written from genuine I've-really-been-there-and-gotten-shot-at experiences. Max Adams has been there, done that, taken some bullets, lived through it and isn't afraid to share it in an honest, practical from-the-heart way with others trying to make it. If you're a screenwriter trying to break into this bat-s*** crazy business, it is a must read. Max Adams writes with the kind of humor and honesty that draws you in and keeps you there no matter where you are in your writing journey. The New Screenwriter's Survival Guide is enjoyable from beginning to end and Max's generous spirit [not to mention her gentle way of kicking you in the behind] will give you hope and arm you with knowledge. And that's half the battle!

This is the first screenwriting book I've read where the author speaks to you like a kick-a**, "here's how it really is" mentor. Max Adams not only genuinely wants you to succeed, but also gives you the inside information you need to make a Hollywood career happen. She gives you an honest dose of LA reality, then shows you how to successfully navigate it, no matter where you live or how seasoned you are. The tips are specific, fresh and straight from the arsenal of her personal experiences. I highly recommend this book. It's the next best thing to actually having Max Adams write and sell your script for you.
