One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them

In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell by chance into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins.

From Sauron's fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, his power spread far and wide. Sauron gathered all the Great Rings to him, but always he searched for the One Ring that would complete his dominion.

When Bilbo reached his eleventy-first birthday he disappeared, bequeathing to his young cousin Frodo the Ruling Ring and a perilous quest: to journey across Middle-earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord, and destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom.

The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the Wizard; the hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam; Gimli the Dwarf; Legolas the Elf; Boromir of Gondor; and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider.

This new edition includes the fiftieth-anniversary fully corrected text setting and, for the first time, an extensive new index.

J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), beloved throughout the world as the creator of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. His chief interest was the linguistic aspects of the early English written tradition, but while he studied classic works of the past, he was creating a set of his own.

Lord of the Rings, a powerful title for a powerful book. The best masterpiece of all times Lord of the Rings takes you to a different world where anything is possible. Lord of the Rings takes you to an accurately depicted land called Middle-Earth (he even draws a map for you). Here any imaginary creature imagined can be located (metaphor) including creatures like orcs, elves, dwarves, and wizards. They are cleverly described in there own unique form, and are made real in front of your eyes. He makes you hate, love, admire, and pity the characters to such extent that you won't be able to put the book down. This book contains everything: tragedy, love, treachery, action, adventure, etc., and is a book that must be read. This book has been made a movie, and may be discouraged to reading it, but this would be a GREAT MISTAKE. The movie is great, I don't deny it, but it doesn't explain the whole book. The book is in the top ten best sellers, and the movies also. J.R.R. Tolkien put his life in this work (it even includes songs and poems), I have never seen a more complete work in my life, nothing is missing. This is truly a masterpiece full of characters, places, and stories.

This is an all time classic. I have read this book about once every 1-2 years now, and I love it!
This is a beautiful edition that I got about a 2 years ago from Barnes and thought, that since I loved it so much, I would write a review about.
I'm not one for long reviews, so here are just a couple things I like about it.
Its beautifuly done and has a rich storyline not to mention the amazing artwork detail they have on this edition.
It quite deeply draws you into the world of middle-earth making you want to read J.R.R. Tolkien's other works on this topic that are so richly rewarding (Hobbit, Silmarillion ect.).
Well, I really don't want to type anymore since I'm a lazy typer, but if you think that you will like this and want to read these books, then this is for you.
On the other hand, if you already have read and love these books, and want a sweet edition of all 3 books in one, then I strongly recommend it.
I myself get many long hard hours of enjoyment reading it almost every year! Can't wait until my little ones will be old enough to appreciate it as well.

About three or four years ago, I was most certainly *not* a lover of fantasy. Sure, I had a vague interest in "Narnia" but for the most part, it wasn't a daily part of my life....until I read "The Lord of the Rings". I became intrigued when I saw the films and was surprised to discover they were originally books. I read them and was promptly hooked. Tolkien has such a unique style, and he goes into enough detail that it draws you in instead of boring you. I marvel at how his Christian faith is clearly revealed in this novel, even thought that was not his intent in the least. It goes to show how rooted he was in his faith in God. His plot, character development, originality, and creativity concerning the extensive geography involved in this book is phenomenal. I loved every sentence and would recommend this novel to *anyone*!!

When I read these books (a long time ago), I couldn't eat, sleep or function in any way. I just had to finish it! Spell-binding classic. I still go back and read passages from time to time just to remind myself of the initial excitement.

a classic fantasy tale, still the best one of the few books I've read more than once.

first line: "When Mr. Bilbo Baggins of Bag End announced that he would shortly be celebrating his eleventy-first birthday with a party of special magnificence, there was much talk and excitement in Hobbiton."An awesome, epic fantasy classic, echoing ancient poems and myths in its story and style and inspiring innumerable authors and artists.

I can't escape it, it's the fate of every world-builder who reads this book to realize that, at last, someone else understands their inner landscape. Someone else has felt the awe and terror of the outdoors, someone else has met the magical and truly known creatures of dreams and longing, someone else has done all we long to do. And each of us build on what he has created, humbly and with all the passion we possess. Thank you, Master Tolkien. We will continue teaching as we were taught.

First and foremost, thank you to the reviewers that addressed the quality of this particular edition. which is the issue I was most interested in. I believe anyone considering to purchase this edition are quite familiar with the works of Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings. The illustrator for this edition, being Alan Lee, is a plus for me. My five star rating is for the written trilogy alone since I am not familiar with this edition. One last personal opinion ... Tolkien has created a world that seems to truly have existed.

J.R.R Tolkien's masterpiece is without a doubt the greatest fantasy book ever written, and it could easily be called the greatest piece of literature of all time. Never has an author created a world so expansive or created such interesting and memorable characters as Mr.Tolkien. It is the ultimate story of pure good vs pure evil, and there is not one dull moment. Middle Earth is a world of beauty, mysticism, and magic. This book will sweep you up and put in this land, the best part is your happy to be there and you never want to leave. I loved getting caught up in Middle Earth, it is one of the greatest reading experiences of my life. I recommend this book to absolutely every single person. Pick up the book, and take a journey through one incredible place. Tolkien''s writing is masterful. Please do yourself a favor and read this book, you won't look at literature the same way ever again.

This book is just incredible! Fantasy doesn't get better than this. The book is also deeply rooted in symbolism, and even parallels WWII. Don't miss this amazing piece of literature.
