Overview

The third novel in Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter’s “Long Earth” series, which Io9 calls “a brilliant science fiction collaboration.”

2040-2045: In the years after the cataclysmic Yellowstone eruption there is massive economic dislocation as populations flee Datum Earth to myriad Long Earth worlds. Sally, Joshua, and Lobsang are all involved in this perilous rescue work when, out of the blue, Sally is contacted by her long-vanished father and inventor of the original Stepper device, Willis Linsay. He tells her he is planning a fantastic voyage across the Long Mars and wants her to accompany him. But Sally soon learns that Willis has an ulterior motive for his request. . . .

Meanwhile U. S. Navy Commander Maggie Kauffman has embarked on an incredible journey of her own, leading an expedition to the outer limits of the far Long Earth.

For Joshua, the crisis he faces is much closer to home. He becomes embroiled in the plight of the Next: the super-bright post-humans who are beginning to emerge from their “long childhood” in the community called Happy Landings, located deep in the Long Earth. Ignorance and fear have caused “normal” human society to turn against the Next. A dramatic showdown seems inevitable. . . .

This one was hard for me to get thru. I found it full of hard science lectures, short on People interaction, rather boring and pointless. Ok The Next got away, we went to the long Mars, and came home but from Sir Terry and Steven Baxter, not their usual writing. Grindingly slow in places, then something momentous tossed off in two sentences, or one paragraph. Disappointing !

Disappointing 3rd entry in a series which started strong but has declined with each successive novel. I suspect declining involvement by Pratchett as any humor or light-heartedness is nearly non-existent. There are too many threads following too many characters to either percieve an overall themes or get invested in individual stories. The opportunity to explore an infinite number of worlds, one of the most exciting possibilites of the original concept, is poorly realized. I was glad when it ended and, should the series continue, won't be following it any longer.

Amazing as the concept of the Long Earth was to read, the writers are really trying to milk it but the cow seems dry. It could have had more interesting plots, especially for the Long Mars, but even there the story was boring and repetitive...poor Sally. And the ending just plain sucked.

These stories are totally unique. But they frequently also seem familiar. I think they looked at all the wondrous sci-fi theories and figured how they could actually happen. I like the stories.

Thought provoking, to the extreme! This book was a wonderful installment in the series, and I couldn't disagree more with the reviews criticizing the pace of the story.

Terry Pratchett writes of a future where you can step from one earth dimension to another. As you step you find not all earths are created equal nor do they all look alike. This series is a great read with good character development and well woven plot from book to book. I highly recommend the series and hope Mr. Pratchett will continue the series.

|| NAME &star This pretty she-cat's name is Ambercloud. ||
|| GENDER &star Hopefully her name was a dead giveaway, but if it wasn't she is a female, or a she-cat. ||
|| AGE &star She is a fairly young cat, only about twenty-one moons with plenty more life to live. ||
|| RANK &star Ambercloud is proud to be ClayClan's Medicine Cat. ||
|| PERSONALITY &star Ambercloud is very doublesided. To those she trusts she is as gentle as a kit, but cross her or someone she loves and you'll get the claws. Even though she will never be allowed to have kits of her own, Ambercloud is very maternal. It's no secret her favorite time as the Medicine Cat is always when a new litter is born. ||
|| APPEARANCE &star Even a mouse-brain could see that Ambercloud is pretty. She is very long legged with tufts of medium length white fur. Her tail is long and wispy, giving her great balance. Ambercloud's eyes are a deep shade of amber, the source of her prefix. The suffix 'cloud' is from the soft, white apperance of her pelt.
|| HISTORY &star It is not something she talks about freely. Gain her trust and maybe someday her secrets will be known. ||
|| THEME SONG &star Me and My Broken Heart - Rixton ||

My name is Victor Mars. Everyone- and l mean EVERYONE calls me VicMars. I changed my name to officially be VicMars because everyone always called me that. Other than my mom. So, l will tell you the most important moment of my life. Here goes:
My life was a total wreck. At least, to everyone their life is a wreck. But, after THAT happened, l realized my life wasn't so bad. Sure, l got expelled a couple of times. That doesn't mean l had a bad life. People just, wanted me to be expelled.
But let's not worry about that. You need to worry about my first year in high school. In my first year of high school, l was looking forward to a wonderful year. I'll bet you already know what's in store for me. Homeroom, guess what luck l had. Yup, sat right in front of the famous bully who was held back 6 years, Armando Stevenson. WHAT KIND OF AN IDIOT SITS RIGHT IN FRONT OF A BULLY?! Really, it's not my fault. It's my principle's fault. The second l went inside the school, the school intercom said,"VICTOR MARS, PLEASE COME TO THE MAIN OFFICE! VICTOR MARS, PLEASE COME TO THE MAIN OFFICE." I went in there and spent 15 minutes listening to the principal, Mr. Gratt, tellin me about 'behavior' and 'good manners'. By the time l finally came out of his office, l was late and homeroom started. Mrs. Rekceb, my homeroom teacher, made me sit in the only seat avaliable. After about 734 Wet Willies and 736 flicks on the head, homeroom ended. Then came first period.
Thanks for reading part one everybody! Part 2 will be on Thursday in the next res. Bye for now!
