The Late Show by Michael Connelly

Introducing Renee Ballard, a fierce young detective fighting to prove herself on the LAPD's toughest beat, from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly.

Renee Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood--also known as the Late Show--beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns everything over to the day shift. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor.

But one night she catches two assignments she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn. Against orders and her partner's wishes, she works both cases by day while maintaining her shift by night. As the investigations entwine, they pull her closer to her own demons and the reason she won't give up her job, no matter what the department throws at her.

WOW a new character thought he could never top his tried and true books,. A must read for all who love to dig deep and let the little details draw them in.

The new protagonist, Renee Ballard is someone I hope to read more about. She is a fighter with a great work ethic. Makes you hope there are real detectives like her out there fighting for the truth. There were at least three plot-lines woven perfectly throughout the story. I don't know how Connelly does it but the ending almost left me breathless! Five stars from me.

Good story but not near as good as the Harry Bosch books and the Mickey Haller books. I have reserved the newest Harry Bosch novel. I wish Connelly would write another Lincoln Lawyer novel.

Soso, hoping for a great character .

Would have enjoyed it more if it was like Harry and Mikey Haller in the relationships department. She had no friends..... Too sad.

Same old story line, reads like dictation. I miss Mickey Haller series!

Good story, unfortunately, too many story lines. It would have been more enjoyable if a little more focused.

I have been reading Michael Connelly's book since I was a young girl and he is easily my favorite author. I was so excited for this new character and even pre-ordered a signed copy of the book. Once I started reading it, however, I terribly disappointed. I appreciate the tenacity of the detective in seeking out justice but there was nothing else about her to find intriguing. (She's HOMELESS by CHOICE). Beyond the character, it seemed as if Connelly was trying too hard to put forth political and social agendas and I would have rather he just stuck to what he was good at -- crime novels! The actual storytelling was intriguing and impeccable as always, but there's so much peripheral to look past that it's almost not worth it. I will definitely be picking up the new Bosch book due out later this year but it will be a tough decision on if I'd ever pick up another Renee Ballard book.

This book did not meet my expectations from Michael Connelly. Don't think I'd purchase the second book with this character. I was really disappointed in that MC is one of my favorite authors. I anxiously await a new book from him and this one was a disappointment. In my opinion.

Thoroughly enjoyed the new lead character, who is an ethical determined female, who, as my grandma used to say "has a hard row to hoe!" I was not sad at her supposed lack of relationships; I admire her lack of needy willingness to attach herself to those who do not measure up to her standards of honesty, loyalty & hard work. Besides she has a great dog!

Renee comes across as wooden, robotic, with no female characteristics. The author turned Harry into a woman. Very slow start and it picked up towards the end. It reads like a police log. Renee has no life, no friends, no home. Very empty world for her.

Michael Connelly has a new series starring Renee Ballard and I am psyched! I love this character! Her boldness, relentlessness, and determination are just some of the traits of this ballsy character that I love! Renee has just been demoted to "The Late Show" which is the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift that no one really wants due to a sexual harassment allegation she imposed on her superior. Especially a stubborn, tenacious woman like Renee who wants to be able to investigate the cases and see them through. This determination, while an excellent trait for a policewoman, gets her into a lot of trouble at work and into some scary situations with some intimidating suspects. Keeping herself safe is foremost in her mind, however, she sometimes lets the heat of the moment and the risks fall wayside leading to her abduction and near death. I especially loved the ending. I had to read twice the part when the suspect was revealed. I could not believe it. I was so sure it was someone else. How did this other guy slip into that list? I surely did not see that one coming. Renee Ballard is definitely and going to be one of my favorite characters. I can't wait to read more books with her as the main character. Especially now that she has a "new job". Thanks to Little, Brown and Company and Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

Another winner from a master of police procedure. His characters are so well defined and Ballard is a wonderful creation.

I've read almost all Michael Connelly books. Liked most of them, and he always writes good interesting detective/police stories. The new character (Renee) is hardworking, driven zealous police officer, motivated by overpowering thirst for justice. No obstacle is too much, even putting herself in danger. The ten or so Crimes she is simultaneously investigating are way too confusing, he should have picked one or two. Don't know if I would read a sequel.

Can't wait to see where Mr. Connelly takes this new detective series.

I really enjoyed this new book by Michael Connelly. This had me hooked right up to the very end. The book took an unexpected turn which I didn't see coming. Not at all what I was thinking. I've read all the Mickey Haller books and several about Harry Bosch. I enjoy reading Connelly's works. I now am hooked on Detective Renee Ballard. Looking forward to reading more about the late show and Renee, who definitely has moxy.

The Late Show proves that Michael Connelly can create a new lead character that draws the reader into the story just as his famous lead character Harry Bosch does.Ballard's leads us on a fast moving quest to determine who is guilty of a very heinous crime.

Great new female protaginist full of an interesting future. I hope many more books will be written in the series. Loved the science and police procedures in solving the cases. Book felt very current and modern with exciting new young Detective.

Almost always love Connelly's books, and this delivers with good pacing, a strong, complicated character, and an interesting mystery; a good "whodonit". Unfortunately, although we eventually find out whodonit, somehow I missed exactly WHY he/she did it. Five simultaneous murders committed in front of several people, perp finally caught, but no explanation to what led up to the murders that I could discern.
