The brainchild of new-metal crusaders Korn, the first Family Values Tour was established in 1998 to showcase an array of like-minded bands to an ever-expanding audience. At that point, Korn had already launched Limp Bizkit's career and were looking to spread the love to the newest Family members Incubus and Orgy. Family Values 99 didn't have quite the camaraderie of its predecessor (though Bizkit's Durst performs with Staind on one track off this collection), but as a concert album, it's a nice antidote to VH1's "Men Strike Back." Korn, who only played a few dates of the tour, contribute a scalding, claustrophobic version of "Falling Away from Me" and a ripping medley of "A.D.I.D.A.S./Good God." And Limp Bizkit perform a quartet of songs including the caustic "Break Stuff," the quasi-delicate "Rearranged," and, of course, the ubiquitous "Nookie." Other eclectic highlights are Primus' quirky "My Name Is Mud," Filter's bludgeoning "Hey Man, Nice Shot," and Crystal Method's electro-endorphine rush "Keep Hope Alive." But it's Staind's "Mudshovel," delivered with equal parts beauty and bile, that stands out as the dark horse track here. Family Values may have outgrown its brotherly beginnings, but it's still keeping hope alive for legions of loud rock fans.
