Overview

This book isn't about the latest celebrity diet, wonder food, or miracle supplement. It's about creating a personalized weight loss plan--your own easiest path to naturally thin. While you can lose weight with almost any diet, keeping the weight off is much more difficult, requiring permanent changes in eating and exercise habits. This book provides a science-based approach for making those changes in a way that works best for you, without wasting time, money, or effort.

What Dr. Spencer offers in this book is a solid approach to weight loss--self-directed, gradual, and lasting--in contrast to the quick but fleeting weight loss offered by most one-size-fits-all diet plans.

"A slim volume that has the basics of behavior change, and includes all the ones people really struggle with." -- Madelyn Fernstrom, diet and nutrition editor, TODAY (1/18/2013)

"There are no superfluous words here, just the facts...This book is not for those who want dangerous shortcuts and lazy, pill-popping tricks. Yet for those who want to lose weight naturally, safely, healthfully and permanently (no matter how gradually) this is simply THE book." -- Be Healthy and Well

"Dr. Spencer's book presents a common sense, safe, and enduring weight loss program that presents the essential elements of a healthy lifestyle." -- James E. Gangwisch, PhD, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University

"Every now and then I actually find [a book] I am wildly enthusiastic about. This is one...The 10 short chapters cover everything you need to know about taking and keeping weight off." -- Genene Coté, nutrition consultant, Down to Earth Fare

"It is rare that I review a book or anything fitness or diet related that is 'all good' but I really can't find a single issue with anything Dr. Spencer has said." -- Health Hound

"If you are looking for a very practical, user friendly, fact based guide to weight control, this is the book for you." -- Jennifer Miyagawa, Registered Dietitian, Jenmi Jenmi

"In order to make a permanent change in the obesity statistics in the United States, every dieter must read this book." -- Cascia Talbert, The Healthy Moms Magazine

"Very informative, and right on target." -- Wayne Westcott, PhD, Fitness Research Director, Quincy College

"Well-presented and easy to understand, this one is highly recommended." -- Susan B. Hagloch, Library Journal (starred review)

"I think it's the only weight loss/healthy lifestyle book we need." -- Kathleen Garber, SMS Book Reviews

Being married to an amateur health guru who writes her own health blog, I have read countless articles, books, magazines and watched innumerable documentaries on the topic of health. In that span of time, I have learned about diets (and why they don't work), sleep, exercise and their effects on overall health. But it was not until I read this book that I found so many high-level concepts reduced to a simple language with specific tactics that make taking up a healthy lifestyle so practical, without being gimmicky in the least. The beauty of this piece is that it deals with weight from every angle - cognitive, emotional and physical. So many works on the market deal with just one at a time, but Dr. Spencer's work provides a blueprint with tactics to manage all three at once to make simple yet effective and lasting change in the reader's life. It also comes in a book that can be read in an afternoon and the reader can start down their new path today. The concepts Spencer addresses in the book need not only apply to those looking to manage their weight - they provide a foundation for anyone wanting to live a healthy lifestyle. I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever tried a diet and not gotten the results they were looking for, as well as anyone who is serious about leading a healthy life

I have never read a book that is so light, yet comprehensive in the same breath. Dr. Spencer lays out a road map for health practices that is not only attainable but spans a breadth of health practices such as diet, exercise and sleep that form a complete guide to true health and well-being. His clean writing style parallels his approach to healthy living and his message translates clearly to readers from all walks of life in that his direction can be practical for anyone who reads the book. This is the kind of book that you will want to send a copy to everyone you care about. Wonderful job.

Mr. Spencer teaches you how to eat the right foods and be healthier. I thought I was eating pretty healthy and after reading the book found out I can do better. There are some good recipes in the back of the book. I used his sleep meditation trick for when I wake up during the night and can't fall back to sleep because I think of too much stuff. The trick worked and I fall back to sleep and ended up getting a good nights sleep. He teaches you about the right foods to eat, exercise and sleep and about drinking enough water. This book is well worth the money to a healthier you.

This is a very common-sense book. Nothing genuinely new but it is a great resource for the first-time dieter that is wanting to make lifestyle changes. It addresses good eating habits & lifestyle, not diet tips. Great resource for a beginner really wanting encouragement to develop healthy habits instead of joining the train of fad diets. I give it four stars. Publisher’s Synopsis: This book isn't about the latest celebrity diet, wonder food, or miracle supplement. It’s about creating a personalized weight loss plan—your own easiest path to naturally thin. While you can lose weight with almost any diet, keeping the weight off is much more difficult, requiring permanent changes in eating and exercise habits. This book provides a science-based approach for making those changes in a way that works best for you, without wasting time, money, or effort. Dr. Spencer explains why we gain weight and why the fat lost by dieting almost always comes back. He then presents an array of practical weight loss tools for controlling emotional eating, calming cravings, boosting metabolism, and improving nutrition and exercise. In the final chapter he has you create a natural weight loss plan based on your unique set of needs, abilities, and preferences. Simple recipes are provided for weight loss foods that reduce cravings and prolong satisfaction. What this book offers is a solid approach to weight loss—self-directed, gradual, and lasting—in contrast to the quick but fleeting weight loss offered by most one-size-fits-all diet plans. For those who want to get more insight into why, where, when we tend to overeat and how to control bad habits, this is a good starting point! It is written with key phrase-points to remember, a simple process that can work, if you apply yourself! There are some good points and explanations, all written without the huge fanfare of other books with clear thoughts, clear explanations! A good book to fall back on for many! A good read for both the 'seasoned weight warrior' and those new to the proverbially 'spare tire/muffin top' thing! This copy was provided by NetGalley and Fine Life Books in exchange for an honest review.

Simple and “spot-on”, this book hits all of the eating challenges that plague todays Americans and offers simple affordable solutions. I highly recommend this self help/non fiction book to anyone that truly is tired of the next new diet, and wants to follow a path to a healthier life that just happens to offer an easy way to become naturally thin as a bonus. Good advice for all ages.
