Overview

The New World, 1545: Vanquished by the Spanish Empire, little remained of the Aztec and Mayan civilizations. From the ashes of their cities, a unified legend emerged: their conquerors possessed a mysterious object, an artifact so powerful—so deadly—that it came to be known as “the Death Relic."

Yucatan Peninsula, present day: When Maria Pelati’s research team disappears in Mexico, she calls Jonathon Payne and David Jones, who embark on a perilous mission to find the missing archaeologists. They soon realize that Maria’s research may hold the key to solving one of the darkest mysteries of the New World. But their quest to learn the truth about the Death Relic may end up costing them their lives.

This is a decent adventure tale interrupted entirely too often by the author's attempts to insert humor into his characters dialog. An archeologist goes missing and the trouble shooting team of Payne and Jones is called in by an old friend to find him. A lot of historical fiction about the Maya and Aztecs is spun into the background of this present day adventure yarn based in Mexico. The build up is unfortunately not sustained, as the ending is rather weak and disappointing. Book provided for review by the good folks at Library Thing.

I love everything Chris Kuzneski writes. I have read everything he has written, I think. The reason I'm not sure is because I feel like I'm missing a book that would have explained and introduced Marie Pelant. I loved this book as all others but I felt like there was a lot of background information that I missed somewhere. Chris is still my favorite author!

For the first time Chris Kuzneski has left me disappointed. Most of the book, though certainly well written, felt like a prelude. At the moment I finally thought, "Yes! Now we are on track..." the book ended abruptly and with little grace. Overall this book left me wondering if it's merely a placeholder for whatever comes next.

Can't wait for the next book. I really enjoy the relationship & humor between Jonathan & David.

I "picked up" one of your books on my Nook a few months ago. I cannot remember the exact circumstances for that first purchase - likely scrolling through the B&N recommendations. I started out of order, but just finished my eigth book. And puchased the first of "The Hunters". What fun these have been to read! Thank you!

The second Kuzneski book I didn't finish. Why do the two main characters do all the "I'm black" "I'm white" jokes? Because that's the only way you can tell them apart! At least the travelogues are shorter this time around. I quit fifty pages before the end because I didn't care what happened to the characters or the caricatures. I hope Chris is young, he is showing signs of improvement. Hoping he learns a shell game is neither engrossing nor suspenseful. No one likes being duped.
