Overview

Betrayal, revenge and a family scandal that bore a 150–year–old mystery

When Cooper McQueen wakes up from a night with a beautiful stranger, it's to discover he's been robbed. The only item stolen—a million-dollar bottle of bourbon. The thief, a mysterious woman named Paris, claims the bottle is rightfully hers. After all, the label itself says it's property of the Maddox family who owned and operated the Red Thread Bourbon distillery since the last days of the Civil War, until the company went out of business for reasons no one knows… No one except Paris.

In the small hours of a Louisville morning, Paris unspools the lurid tale of Tamara Maddox, heiress to the distillery that became an empire. Theirs is a legacy of wealth and power, but also of lies, secrets and sins of omission. Why Paris wants the bottle of Red Thread remains a secret until the truth of her identity is at last revealed, and the century-old vengeance Tamara vowed against her family can finally be completed.

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4 The Bourbon Thief is the story of the Maddox families rise and fall. This was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. A crazy crazy ride of every emotion you could possible have. There is so much that happens in this book that I didn’t expect or was prepared for. There is so much that I could tell you but I don’t want to give away anything. I will give you just a little. The Bourbon Thief starts with a woman in a fancy red dress looking for a man to share a nice glass of bourbon with. Lucky for Cooper McQueen this woman just walked into his bar and is about to change his life. Such a great story! This is also my first Tiffany Reisz book and I really enjoyed reading/listening to this book. I did listen to this book on audio. This was also my first book listening to Kim Staunton. Ms. Staunton did a fabulous job of bring these characters to life. Even though I was listening to this book in the Pacific Northwest I felt like I was in the south. Ms. Staunton did a wonderful job with the voices and accents. I will be adding her to my list of narrators I enjoy and will be watching for more of her work in the future. Disclaimer: I purchased this audiobook from Audible.com and this review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

"The truth is like bourbon - it'll burn going down." Tiffany Reisz couldn’t have picked a more perfect time to release her newest novel The Bourbon Thief. In a time of racial stress and a struggle for human empathy and understanding in America, this book of fiction contributes much needed perspective in my opinion. It shows examples of white privilege, the frustrations of persons of color who live a never-ending history of being viewed/treated differently, and it offers a necessary perspective of how slavery continues to impact an entire race. It’s present in family trees, in the memories of precious elders, in coffee table photo albums, and at the core roots of some successful businesses that continue to thrive today. Slavery may already have found a place in the history books but it lingers still. The Bourbon Thief is quality entertainment; it’s complex as all get out with family, cultural, and historical dynamics, it has an engaging romance with one hell of a jaw-dropping revelation (just wait for it!), and the storytelling is superb as a present-day narrator takes us into the past. I hope every reader also gains some additional insight though. I loved this book and absolutely adore Ms. Reisz for writing it...whether she meant for it to have such an impact or not. Read it! My favorite quote: “How are you going to get revenge against dead people? Dig ’em up and stake ’em through the heart?” “I asked myself that same question, and I think I know the answer. You destroy what they loved, and you love what they destroyed.” Note: For readers who follow Ms. Reisz, it's important to note that The Bourbon Thief is more historical fiction with a touch of mystery and less of the erotica you may be accustomed to from her. I wouldn't want your expectations to be too disappointed, wink wink. However, she wouldn't be our fabulous Tiffany Reisz if she didn't push the envelope in some way. Just read it, you'll see what I mean ;)

Cooper McQueen recently purchases the very first and last remaining bottle of bourbon from the Red Thread Distillery. But after a one night stand, he waked to catch Paris Christie trying to steal the bottle claiming it is hers. So, Paris agrees to tell the story of the Red Thread distillery. It is late 1970s and Tamara Maddox has just turned 16. Tamara is the heir to the Red Thread distillery but she is more interested in getting the attention of Levi Shelby, the stable hand. What follows is the history of the Red Thread Distillery and how Tamara fits into the family business and how she becomes the downfall of the distillery. This is an amazing story. Just following the Maddox family could be made into a day time drama with all of the power, corruption, love, hatred, revenge, scandal, and everything in between. It is definitely hard to give a description of the book without giving too much of it away. But I will say this, just when you think you couldn’t be more shocked the ending will leave you speechless. I have not read any other Tiffany Reisz books. But after reading The Bourbon Thief I will definitely will be checking them out. I received The Bourbon Thief for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Have you ever watched a movie that was so good that you almost felt like you were in a fog when it was over? Its almost as if you were sucked into the movie itself and it took a bit of time to force yourself back into reality. Well, that is what it is like reading a book by Tiffany Reisz. She is a masterful story teller. Her writing is captivating, it pulls you in and makes you feel like you are right there watching the whole story unfold. Be prepared for a book hangover. I read this in one sitting, I just could not put it down. I think my house could have collapsed and I would not have noticed. This book is not like her Original Sinner Series, it is not erotica. It was outside of my preferred genres but worth every minute and every penny I spent. I cannot imagine anyone would regret buying this book, I highly recommend it. ps- If you have not read her Original Sinners Series, you need to rectify that ASAP!

Cooper McQueen is a very wealthy man who loves a good bourbon. While sitting in his bar, he sees a lovely dark-skinned woman walk in. When she asks for a shot of Red Thread bourbon, she is told that it has not been made in many years. Cooper introduces himself to the woman, who calls herself Paris, and after some conversation, she agrees to meet him at his vast estate, Lockwood. She tells him she is a rich widow from Kentucky. When he teasingly asks her if she is after his money, she responds that he is after his bourbon - most specifically his prized possession of a one-million-dollar bottle of Red Thread Bourbon. It is the first bottle ever made. She claims to be part of the Maddox family who were the makers of Red Thread bourbon. She has inherited the business and begins to tells Cooper the story about the beginning of the Maddox family as follows: Tamara Maddox, has just turned 16. Tamara and her mother, Virginia, have lived with her grandfather ever since her father passed away. Her mother and grandfather are always arguing. Tamara is spoiled and bothers Levi Shelby all the time demanding to ride her horse. Levi is much older than Tamara and works in the stables of her vast estate. When Tamara asks Levi for a birthday kiss, her mother catches them and is furious. She is given a choice of sending Levi away or she will shoot her beloved horse. Her mother explains to her that when her grandfather passes away, she will be the only Maddox left and it will be up to her to keep Red Thread going. But her grandfather has a even better plan to ensure the Maddox blood survives. When the truth comes out about the different family members, the shock is enormous. After a night of violence at her home, Tamara runs away with Levi and thus begins her life of healing from the many disturbed members of the Maddox family. This book is one that is quite mesmerizing. Starting from slave days to the present, we see the extent that men and women will go to to get what they want in life. The story is brutal at times, but expresses love as well. This historical novel is very good. I had some qualms about the character of Paris because I felt her actions conjured up racism where I don’t think it belonged in the story.
