I am so happy I found this book. (It was around 220 pages) I laughed out loud several times as well as teared up a few times too. The characters and their banter were perfect and truly made this book what it was! I can't wait to read more from this author.

Ok, so I love a romance novel that makes me laugh, and this one had me laughing out loud, giggling like I was 12 again and rooting Travis on. My thanks go out to the author, Rachel, you write a great contemporary book and I hope there are many more to follow!

Two brothers....the girl they grew up with....the bet the brothers made as young boys...the misinterpretations of a lifetime...the meddling grandmother...the growing apart of friends...two realizing they are made for each other... All of these combine to make one AWESOME story! Rachel Van Dyken has a way of crafting stories that draw you in and have you rooting for her characters. You begin to care for them right from the start and The Bet is no different! What I loved about these characters was that they are not perfect -- so they seem real. And best of all The Bet had me not only laughing throughout the book it also left me with a couple of tears. I was sad to see this book end -- but happy to learn there will be a second book!

This could have been a nice little story but the characters were so very immature. I didn't feel they were developed very well. The main character is yet another smart mouthed brat that stomps off at every opportunity and turns a awkward situation into a major traumatic issue. Other reviewers enjoyed the banter but after reading this I felt as though I'd spent several days in a middle school class room.

There is not one thing I actually liked about this book. The characters have no personality or depth, the plot is boring and highly unbelievable, and I cannot believe how poorly written it was. Half of the time I did not even know who was speaking! The story's main characters are 22 and 23, but they act like high school students, so immature the entire time. I am in my early twenties and this is a book written for high school girls wth poor vocabulary and literally skills. Pass on this book! Lucky for me I only paid $0.99 for it!

I had thought that after reading her historical books that I knew what I was getting. Seriously....wrong! Rachel is one of those authors who can write contemporary as well as historical, and still make me love the story. I was captivated by the connection between Travis and Kasey right from the beginning. Loved this cute, sweet, and romantic story. I will  purchase her contemporary stories again without hesitation. Loved this book!! :)

This book is quite unique, at least it was for me. It reads like a romantic sit-com. Everything that can go wrong, does. Every opportunity is interrupted. Every comment misinterpreted. Don't get me wrong, it was quite amusing but it felt fiction. Jake and Travis grew up with Kacey. She's the girl next door. They're brothers. As the younger brother, Jake was the best friend to Kacey. They had their moments of more in high school and again with the "incident" but it hadn't worked. Travis is the brother who loves her and can't show it. He chases her in a very little boy way. Spiders, snakes and rocks are all involved. She calls him Satan. But she doesn't always notice how much he's there for her. When Jake needs to smooth things over with the press, he thinks a fake engagement to the one girl he should love is the perfect plan. He's not good enough for her but he thinks he should love her. Problem is that he's an a$$ and she's not what he needs at all. But thinking of his poor sick (NOT) grandmother who's always been there for her, she agrees. Too bad Travis (aka Satan) will also be there. Yeah, these characters do have a childish charm to them and they really are still pretty young but I love them. Of course, Travis is my favorite. (I actually wanted to drop-kick Jake the first time he...never mind). Travis is a sweetie who has been in love with Kacey since he was eight and made a bet with his younger brother. Even though he has a terrible way of showing his feelings, Travis did so many sweet things I was a pile of goo for him. Kacey is struggling with the death of her parents and the "incident". She needs to work through it all and Grandma has a plan. And no one should ever get in the way of Grandma's plans. She's a riot, really. While these characters and this story really felt like a work of fiction, I found is amusing and entertaining. Giggled some and swore once or twice. It's a fun read.

Equates to looking forward to brownies all day and then finding them over baked and salty

This is my first book by this author, and I’m not super impressed unfortunately. I’m giving this 2 out of 5 stars. The writing wasn’t my cup of tea, at least for this book. I’ll give the author another try because I’ve heard good things. I think the different POVs didn’t help; they kind of jumped all over the place. Honestly most of the time I couldn’t tell whose POV we were in, because they all sounded alike. If it’s multiple POV, it has to be spot on for me. The characters were pretty immature, and I felt like they were so confused with all the back and forth with their feelings. Decide what you want people! This entire book felt like a soap opera, but not in a good way. It was too over the top dramatic for me. I really didn’t like Kacey, or Jake. Travis was okay sometimes. The only character I kind of liked was Grandma Nadine, because she was pretty hilarious.

From child hood crush/love to a bet as little boys on the girl next door to the love the that got away and is back. The story of Travis and Kacey is a master piece . The tension between the two that brings out their love is a wonderful story. This book has will make you feel for the characters, cry and laugh out loud . Also you just gotta love grandma.
