A morose parrot with a reputation for biting perches in a small cage in the lobby of Brookside Retirement Community. For Josephine, a reluctant resident, he sums up the place which friend and handwriting expert, Lill, has dubbed Babbling Brook (in honor of the missing waterway and the more exasperating residents). However, Brookside turns out to be more interesting than Josephine expected, as it becomes the setting for art theft, other dodgy dealings, and…naked poker. Investigating the unusual events, Josephine and Lill befriend Devi Subramanian, a young woman Josephine tries to prevent from making the same mistakes she has made.

The fiesty residents in a retirement community work together to fight crimes large (relatives swindling estates) and small (a grocery deliverer who rounds the tallies up into his own pocket). The story is told through a variety of voices, but since the speakers are identified at the beginning of each chapter, that was not confusing for me. It was well written, without the spelling errors and grammar gaffes that plague many e-books..

This is one of best beginning books in a series I read in a long time. Not only is it very well written, it keeps you coming back for more. Most first books in a series are short you know where you will end up. This book had lots of twist and and kept me hooked till the end will definitely be reading the next book.

I really liked the way the author gave a rolling narrative by the four main characters. Twice I thought the story was over but it wasn't. The plot was not obvious so it kept me reading. Thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Loved it! Feisty, humorous characters. Has a few bad characters but good always wins. (At least it should always win!) Can't wait for follow-ups.p.s. Why am I not finding all AW's books shown at the end of this one on Nook. When is part 2 of this one coming out?

I want to be friends with these people. Josephine was forced to move into Babbling Brooklyn by her son. What know one knows is Jo is able to take care of herself as she proves when she assists in the solving of several high-end thefts taking place. Lill, Devi, and Mac round out this group of crime solvers...even with 40 years difference in age. Can't wait to read book 2. Karon J

I didn't know what to expect from a book with this title, but it was free so what the heck...and I don't regret a thing! This is the best beginning book of a series that I've read in a while. The story was different, unexpected, and highly entertaining. The writing flowed naturally and the interactions between the characters were believable. There was obviously a lot more going on at this retirement home than is normal or it wouldn't have been an interesting read and I wouldn't have felt compelled to actually leave a review (something I NEVER do). I'll admit that the free book sucked me in, but I'm definitely going to be reading more of the series, and probably anything else by the author.

This was an excellentvread. i laughed, I was outraged and often leftbon the edge of my seat. These arecall qualities i look for in a book. I couldn't put it down, and was sad when it ended. Give it a go! It's worth it!

I am a reading addict so I read a lot of books. This one was free so a big draw with my limited budget. It goes on my list of books to actually pay for the authors book! I admit I did not expect a lot. Was definitely surprised and pleased. The book had intertwined stories that melded together well. All are interesting. The stories were complete yet will hopefully lead to many more in a long lived series! The characters were interesting and well developed. Both good and bad characters and some who crossed those lines. One thing to point out is that it had a slow start for several pages but was necessary for us to understand the people. Give it a try. I think you will enjoy it!

I had a hard time putting this book down! I loved how each chapter was about a different character but the story was woven so everything tied it together. Can't wait to read the next one!

Enjoyed the book after I got further into the story. It started a bit slow but developed into an interesting story with some life lessons along the way.

Carefully thought out with no questions left unanswered. I liked the main, but humanely flawed characters - which is an important ingredient in any enjoyable book. I plan to continue reading the series post haste!

Initially caught by the title of this book, I became enchanted by the strength of Josephine and the understated intelligence of Lillian. Josephine's manipulative son packs up his newly widowed mother and deposits her into a senior living home (Brookside). All of the couple's assets were transferred to him by the will and Josephine has only what she managed to hide from her husband. Thankfully, that was a lot! Her investments prospered while her husband's investments tanked. LOL Brookside residents are being stolen from and these two, with the help of the activity director and a local police detective, solve both mysteries and prevent assault. Someone gets shot, some fall in love, some get drugged, an imaginary child prompts a cancer fundraiser, and some even apologize in this enchanting novel of life as a senior. I will DEFINITELY be reading the rest of this series and recommending it to the activity director of the nursing home I visit weekly. I Googled the Scotch, beautiful pictures of the facility. Thanks for that. Next search will be the artist.
