Every day, children are diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). They are given powerful drugs like Ritalin in order to cope with their ADD, but many parents don’t realize the dangerous side effects associated with these drugs, particularly the possibility of dependency. Addressing the causes of ADD and ADHD should be the first step in any treatment, but unfortunately, conventional drug therapies treat only the symptoms, not the causes.

In their new book, The A.D.D. & A.D.H.D. Diet!, authors Rachel Bell and Dr. Howard Peiper take a uniquely nutritional approach to treating ADD and ADHD. The authors first address the root causes of the disorders, from poor nutrition and food allergies to environmental contaminants. They discuss which foods your child can eat and which foods he should avoid. To make changing your child’s diet easier, the authors also offer you their very own healthy and delicious recipes. Final chapters examine the importance of detoxifying the body, supplementing diet with vitamins and nutrients, and exercising regularly in order to achieve good health.

Managing your child’s ADD doesn’t have to be a chore. With The A.D.D. & A.D.H.D. Diet!, you can learn how a simple change in diet may be the most effective treatment for your child.

About the Author,

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are diagnosed more often now than ever before. Increased awareness about these conditions may contribute, in part, to the rise in documented cases. Other reasons may include changes in our diets, lack of essential nutrients, greater exposure to biologically active agents in our food, and water supplies. Unfortunately, solutions aren’t happening fast enough, as witnessed by the gross numbers of people still suffering, of which several million of these are children.

The symptoms of ADD/ADHD are manifestations of a dysfunction of the central nervous system. The patterns of imbalance observed in these disorders vary from person to person in an individualized, person-specific, constellation of symptoms, as follows.

Behavioralshort attention span

inability to focus or concentrate

inability to sit still

uncontrollable limbs

shifting from one uncompleted activity to another

tendency to be easily distracted

difficulty following instructions

difficulty sustaining attention to tasks

difficulty playing quietly

appearing not to listen

irritability and anxiousness

compulsive, aggressive, destructive behavior

head knocking

temper tantrums

withdrawn demeanor

difficulty communicating feelings

slow learning and reasoning ability

lessened perceptual and conceptual ability

impairment of language and memory skills

difficulty getting along with other people

avoided by other people

tendency to interrupt

tendency to talk too much, too loud, too fast

tendency to blurt out whatever comes to mind

difficulty awaiting turn

poor motor control

tendency to be accident prone

People with ADD/ADHD may be fine one minute and “off the wall” the next. This apparent random type of behavior may not be random at all. It may be caused by food or environmental allergens. It could be due to a blood sugar disturbance, mineral imbalance, or the presence of toxic metals at the cellular level. It could be caused by any number of things. Most certainly it is not coincidence.

This book contains many ridiculous and dangerous treatment options, all of which are presented in a cavalier tone. Eat a rock that binds charged metal that the army uses to clot blood??? How is that a good idea to treat ADHD? Hexagonal water that contains many OHs??? Waters formula is H20! Also, notice if you google hexagonal water only one hit comes up and that is Peiper's other book on the cure-all benefits of "hexagonal water". Hardly any of the authors evidence is supported in the scientific literature and the authors themselves are an optometrist and a school teacher!

This book has helped my son in so many ways. He was diagnosed with AD/HD a 10 months ago. I really wanted to use medication as a last resort. I have found this information to be very helpful in learning what triggers his attention problems. Sometimes, it is hard to follow all of the recommendations, but I have noticed a tremendious difference in his behavior and learning ability. His grades all went up a full letter grade in the last trimester. Please read this book and use the information if you or a loved one has AD/HD or ADD. It will change your life!

I was really excited when I found this book. I thought, 'Great! Maybe I won't have to take the medication anymore!' I started reading it, and it was mostly very straightforward and easy to understand. SOMETIMES, THOUGH, I felt like I was being condescended to, like I wouldn't be able to understand if the information (or usually, a process/result) wasn't simplified to the point of stupidity. AND as I read along, I came across a comma stuck in the middle of a sentence where there was no need for it. This annoyed me but I kept reading. A few pages later it happened again. Again, I was annoyed but I kept reading. I did finish the book, but by that time there were so many wrong commas I wanted to throw it. To me, it isn't hard to get a good proofreader and/or copy editor, especially if you've published professional writings before and/or are updating a previous work. Or even learn where to put your commas on your own. I place a lot of emphasis on presentation. It's like writing a resume. If you make typos and spelling/grammar errors all over your resume/cover letter, the person reading it is going to wonder about you and whether they can trust the information or documents you would be producing for them. Same thing here. Yes, the book has good information, but the grammar is messed up and that makes me wonder if I can trust the content. It's NOT a BAD book. The information seems to be sound. I just like the grammar to be sound as well.

**** I went through this book marking sections to go back over and re-read. Much of the book is geared toward explaining what A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. is, the symptoms, and possible contributing factors. I could not help but wonder WHY? Anyone looking up information on A.D.D. and/or A.D.H.D. already knows what it is. Chances are they have talked, in depth, to their doctor(s) already. .............................. A.D.D. stands for Attention Deficit Disorder. The 'H' stands for someone with A.D.D. and has hyperactivity with it. If you are looking for something with A.D.L.D. ('L' stands for a problem with 'Learning' instead of a problem with 'Hyperactivity'.) Then this book is NOT for you. Nothing in this book even remotely touches A.D.L.D. ......................... This book is put together to give an idea of how to treat the symptoms of A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. naturally. That does not mean you will successfully treat the disorder by what is in this book. But what parent would not want to read everything they can find on the subject and gain an idea of what else they could possibly do? This book will have you parents saying 'Yeah! That is exactly what my child is like! I know exactly what you mean!' I may be a 'reviewer' but I only agreed to review this book because my own son is A.D.H.D. Whether you give medication or not, this book is for you! The concerned parent! The one who does not want to miss a chance of helping your child have a better life, now and in the future! .............................. This book has been a best seller for a long time. It is revised often, as all good medical non-fictions are. After all, scientists and doctors are learning new things every single day. The public needs to be educated. Here is your chance to BE educated. Do not let it pass! ......................... The chapters include: ................. ............... If You Want Something Different, You've Got to Do Something Different............... Going Through The Open Door............. 'But Why Do I Have ADD?'............... The First Step Toward Changing Your Diet What Should You Eat?.............. Tasty Recipes..................... The Importance of Detoxifying................ Supplements That We Need............... Nutrients That Help A.D.D. & A.D.H.D............... Non-Dietary Approaches to A.D.D. / A.D.H.D............ Resource Directory, Bibliography, Index. ****

My 6 year old son has always been active, but this year he was having a hard time with school and discipline. I didn't know what to do anymore. I took him to a Wellness Pediatrician and a friend lent me this book and it was the answer to our prayers. We changed his diet drastically and started with protein and minerals that he was lacking in his diet and he's doing great. It's a lot of work and he didn't like it at first, but as he saw the results himself, he turns down things he should eat when others offer it to him. I am buying this book for his teacher (which was a great help)!
