Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture is a sonic spectacle, and few versions sound as spectacular as this one. Featuring the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra supplemented by the University of Minnesota Brass Band -- not to mention a real 18th-century brass canon and pealing church bells -- this album has amazed audiophiles since it was first released way back in 1958. Thanks to the genius of Mercury's engineers, the recording remains mind-blowingly clear. Beethoven's potboiler, Wellington's Victory, is not his most exalted composition, but it makes a terrific racket, especially with the battery of artillery assembled for this recording. Your spouse may try to hide this disc from you, and your neighbors will shake their fists, but oh, what fun you'll have!
