Great compilation of several of the best writers in the Warhammer universe (i.e., Abnett, Thorpe, McNeill, etc.). No story is longer than 100 pages but some of them feel like they could have been novels on their own. For true Warhammer buffs, it's great to get a view at a few of the Patriarchs and even the Emperor has a major role in one story. You also get a view of life on Terra leading up to the war and how the Emperor was protected which was inventive and had a nice twist. Great read but is better to be read after some of the other Heresey novels.

If you love learning about the Emperor and his children then you will love this. Steeped in gritty political and religious no-no's. I enjoyed every page.

Very interesting story collection. From Legio Custodes (as far as I know first story about these mysterious warriors), Battle Sisters (interesting story how internal conflict can prevent people from thinking straight) to Astartes legions (in very disturbing stories, especially those concerning Dark Angels (again, brilliant old-shool vs new generation conflict) and Word Bearers) and their Primarchs (story of rather deranged Angron) to the Emperor himself (this story raises the same question as ¿Mechanicum¿ novel ¿ what are exactly Emperor¿s intentions with humanity?).Humanity¿s future truly looks grim ¿ they depend on almost invincible warriors that have a rather no-compromise approach to life¿ and aren¿t compromises what life is mostly made of?It will be interesting to see what happens next.Recommended.

The fact there are several short stories in this book from different main-type characters from different sides is a good thing to see. I would recommend this to anyone who is already into the series, or someone whom is looking at it.

Warhammer is a fascinating alternate universe. It is a place not seen in shade of grey but colored by blood! Kyme & Priestley lay the cornerstone of empire in the anthology "Horus Heresey". By exposing the roots of the conspiracy against the "emperor", the stage is set for the exciting, high paced, space action that "Warhammer" is known for!

Finally, a story in this book is about the ADEPTUS CUSTODES!! If you don't know who they are, buy the book and find out.
