Overview

With her third recording, and her first on a major label, Jane Monheit proves she’s no flash in the pan. A victim of excessive hyperbole she may have been a few years ago, but Monheit’s talent has faithfully seen her through. Sticking to the basics here, Monheit brings luster to familiar standards with the support of, at various times, a jazz ensemble, a big band, and an orchestra. Yet her most effective moments are the most modest in scale. On “Bill” Monheit is accompanied only by a piano, on “Embraceable You” by a single guitar --the results are glorious in their affecting simplicity. Among the standout tracks a playful “I Won’t Dance” finds her dueting with Michael Bublé, while “Honeysuckle Rose” features the great bassist Christian McBride. Although Monheit's repertoire touches on songs that have been covered by dozens of top-notch singers, it’s heartening to hear this young stylist bring to them her own special touch. The closing track, “Over the Rainbow,” is a case in point. It takes a staunch performer to approach Judy Garland’s signature song, yet Monheit acquits herself with honors. Its success is typical of an album that makes good on all the hoopla previously laid at Monheit’s feet.
