She also developed the FoodNetwork.com series The Picky Eaters Project, serves as lead judge on Guy's Grocery Games, and is the author of the New York Times bestselling cookbook Ten Dollar Dinners. Melissa has an MBA from Georgetown University, and lives with her husband and their four daughters in San Diego.

Beautifully written and presented, this book is a quick guide for anyone looking to make some health-conscious meals. The beginnings introduces some basics of what to keep handy in the pantry as well as some nutrition basics. However, the author makes it clear that her book is not a diet or nutrition book but rather a cookbook focused on staying healthy. The book is broken down into sections. Besides breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and desserts, this book divides up recipes further into sections for poultry, fish, pasta, and more, which is nice. The pictures are very high-quality, and the colored printing is fun for the text. There are tips for entertaining, as well as stretching a budget. The directions themselves are pretty straightforward and in a good readable-sized font. Overall, this is a fun cookbook. However, it does not focus on any particular food avoidance or allergy. So, if you avoid certain foods, just skip those recipes in this book and focus on others. Or, feel free to substitute ingredients, which the author suggests.
Since one of the themes I am working on for this year is figuring out what healthy looks like for us, I was excited about the opportunity to review the new cookbook by Melissa d'Arabian entitledSupermarket Healthy. The tagline immediately got my attention "Recipes and Know-How for Eating Well without Spending a Lot." That is exactly what I am hoping to do this year! The cookbook has a nice lay out and the recipes are categorized nicely into sections such as breakfast, snacks, pasta, chicken and turkey, and dessert (amongst others). One of my favorite features is the strategies throughout the book. These are color-coded and offer great tips for the supermarket, the kitchen, and entertaining. Another nice feature are recipe blueprints to show you how to break down the recipe and make it your own by switching out ingredients or cooking methods. I consider myself a novice in the kitchen, so I did feel as though the cookbook was bit fancier food overall with dishes like "Caramelized Brussel Sprouts, Pine Nuts, and Penne" and "Flatiron Steaks with Quick Cauliflower Kimchi." However, I was able to test out a few of the dishes (like the "Deconstructed Lasagna"), and both Mexi-malteco and I enjoyed them. If you are looking for some new inspiration in the kitchen to help you eat healthier this year, I would recommend taking a look at this cookbook.
