One summer could expose years of family secrets . . . or leave them with a happily ever after they never saw coming.

One of Southern Living’s “25 Beach Reads Perfect for Summer”

When her grandmother goes missing from the family beach house, Maddy and her estranged sisters converge in Sea Haven, North Carolina. Being with uptight Nora and free-spirited Emma in the home where their family broke apart is a struggle Maddy is not in the mood to face, especially since she’s recovering from her ex-boyfriend’s betrayal.

As the sisters wait for word of their grandmother, they begin to pack up the family belongings—and unpack memories of the idyllic summers of their childhood. But with those memories come long-buried secrets, and Maddy discovers that all was not as it appeared that last summer in Sea Haven. Meanwhile, Gram’s neighbor, Connor Sullivan, seems overly interested in Gram’s whereabouts. Maddy is drawn in by his quick smile and steady gaze in spite of herself.

Undercurrents of jealousy and resentment threaten to pull the family under again, maybe for good this time. As tensions rise, the sisters must find a way to accept each other for the women they’ve become—and Maddy must decide if falling in love again is worth the potential heartbreak.

This inspirational contemporary read is a standalone novel.

Book length: approximately 85,000 words. Includes group discussion questions.

When Maddy learns her grandmother is missing from her beach house Maddy and her sisters arrive right away. The last time the siblings have been together was years ago, a summer that tore the family apart. Being back in the beach house opens old wounds and long buried secrets. Where is grandma? What secrets has she been keeping? I am a big fan of Denise Hunter and I really enjoyed this story. The ties of family, secrets, sisters, second chances, love…. there was all of it. I read it in the autumn but it would make a perfect beach read. Denise Hunter has a way of writing real people with real lives. She makes me feel as if I am living right there with them and I love that. *I received this book free from The Fiction Guild and Thomas Nelson in exchange for my honest review. What I have expressed are entirely my own thoughts and I was not compensated in any monetary way*

3.75 stars- This is the latest beach read offering by Denise Hunter. Things seem to be unraveling in Mandy Monroe’s life so when she gets the call that her Grandma is missing she doesn’t hesitate to rush to her Grandma’s seaside cottage in North Carolina. What she doesn’t expect is for her 2 older sisters to also show up or to meet her Grandma’s intriguing next door neighbor, Connor. This is the perfect read for a beachside vacation. You can kick back in your beach chair under your beach umbrella, dig your toes in the sand and dive into a juicy story of family secrets and blossoming love. Denise Hunter is an expert at creating swoon worthy characters and storylines. Families come in all different shapes and sizes and it’s always interesting to read about those different family dynamics. I received a copy of this book for free. I was not required to post a positive review and the views and opinions expressed are my own.

Quick, easy, light read. I got into it right away and kept turning the pages to see what exactly happened between the sisters and whether or not they would reconcile. I really enjoyed it.

Summer by the Tides is the must read book of the summer! I have always been a fan of Denise Hunter's ability to draw you in to the lives of her compelling characters and this novel was no exception. Three sisters return to Sea Haven, North Carolina when a neighbor of their grandmothers reaches out to them because their grandmother is missing. Putting their own turbulent lives on hold, the sisters come together for the first time in a long time because of past hurts and broken relationships. Readers get a front row seat to past and present family secrets being revealed, reconciliation, forgiveness, dealing with heartbreak, and the prospect of bright futures for these sisters. Oh and in true Denise Hunter fashion, readers will enjoy just the right amount of romance. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas Nelson Publishers through Net Galley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

SUMMER BY THE TIDES is a highly anticipated release for Christian romance fans. Hunter does an excellent job with her fully-fleshed, complex characters and a story that will pull on readers' hearts from beginning to end. I knew after the first chapter that this story was going to be quite an emotional ride. The story mostly focuses on Maddy and Connor and the romance that develops between them (with plenty of chemistry and swoon-worthy moments), but it's about so much more than that. It's about fear, mistakes, forgiveness, and family. Maddy is stuck in the middle of her two older and estranged sisters. With all three of them staying at their grandmother's beach house where all the trouble started, they end up rehashing old grudges. The hope is that somehow they can find reconciliation, but it's a long ways off. I really liked these characters, particularly Connor. He easily won me over and was the bright spot in all the mess. The other sisters had so many issues and fears and it was hard sometimes to always feel empathy for them when they were acting so childish and giving in to anger and fear so easily. A lot of it was hypocritical too - they were so judgmental of each other but not willing to change themselves. I particularly had issues with Emma (did she ever think that maybe her sister saved her from a cheater and terrible husband - and she's remarried, but can't seem to focus on that instead of her past?), and with Maddy who was so afraid and in denial that she was always sabotaging herself. I think the story felt heavy and more dramatic with these sisters than what I was expecting, which made it feel a tad overdone. Thank goodness for Connor and for the girls' grandma. I really enjoyed the romance and the inspirational aspects that lightened the story and brought some good introspective moments. In the end, was it what I wished for? I enjoyed this book, particularly the romantic storyline, and am looking forward to more from this author. Content: Some innuendo and references to affairs, but clean. Source: I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through JustReadTours, which did not require a positive review nor affect my review in any way.

If Hallmark doesn't turn this book into a made-for-TV movie I'll be severely disappointed. Hunter goes beyond her typical romance plot and incorporates a splash of women's fiction and a drop of family saga (yes, puns intended....). However, since this is a standalone novel, every side plot is nicely tied together by the end. The romance between Conner and Maddy is strong and satisfying (and a little angst-y at times, which keeps the pages turning). The setting made me wish I was there. I'm a big fan of Ms. Hunter's, and I can't wait to see what she brings her readers next!

This book makes for a fabulous summery beach read! I loved Hunter’s writing style and found that the writing and plot flowed very nicely, allowing me to read it quickly. I loved the character and relationship development in the story too. It had a sweet romance but also focused largely on family and the relationships between Maddy and her sisters. I enjoyed that aspect of the story. Overall, I really enjoyed this read and look forward to more books from this author.

A sweet romance from Denise Hunter, what a surprise--NOT! I've read all of Hunter's books and have yet to be disappointed. Summer by the Tides was a fun, beach-friendly read and I'm grateful for the opportunity to review it! Two things I love about Hunter's books are a) character development and b) setting. I love it when books have the ability to transport me to a new place. This one just made me want to curl up in a hammock somewhere with a view of the Marina. The big takeaway in this novel, however, was the family of characters that took center stage in this story. Maddy and Connor's romance was one of the sweetest I've read in a long time. I loved the dialogue between them and the way their relationship developed felt truly genuine. I especially enjoyed their dialogue! But Summer by the Tides was so much more than the romance, as it incorporated a redemption storyline between three sisters, two of which carried years of heartache, betrayal, guilt, and resentment. Naturally, there was a HEA ending, but it didn't come easily for any of them--something I appreciate in the romances I read, as it's more true-to-life. Ready for the next Hunter book!!!

I found Summer by the Tides by Denise Hunter to be a great summer read to start the days of June off with. There are some sisters that get pulled together because their Grandmother comes up missing and that’s where the story begins. It twists and turns and there’s rejoicing and sadness and there is great description of what living on the water can bring to a person. It makes me want to buy a beach house. Life is too short to live with division. As much as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all men. Forgiveness and breaking generational habits are themes as well. I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

From the beginning of the book Summer by the Tides captured my imagination. Part of that may be attributed to being a Carolina girl. Having grown up around Charlotte and then living on the coast of North Carolina, I could appreciate the story and the details. Maddie’s betrayal and job loss caused me to want a second chance for her. The idea of a grandmother gone missing broke my heart. This book is the perfect summertime book. It kept my interest and had intrigue and drama between the three sisters. The story includes regret and second chances and the opportunity for redemption. Connor provides the perfect go-between for the sisters. So if you want a wonderful summer read, check out this book for yourself. I received a copy of this book for my fair and honest review.

I adore Denise Hunter's writing, and Summer by the Tides is no exception. Maddy's grandmother goes missing from her home on the coast of North Carolina, and Maddy finds out when her grandmother's neighbor, Connor, calls her. Maddy leaps into action, and when she arrives, find that her sisters Nora and Emma are also en route. Maddy and her sisters have to do their best tolerating each other while they wait on updates on their grandmother. While they sift through memories in their grandmother's home, they work to process the secrets, from both the past and present, they uncover in the process. This stand-alone is a wonderful summer read. I already want to reread Summer by the Tides, since I flew through it the first time. I was given a copy of this book. A positive review was not required, and the opinions here are my own. Now, go read this book.

Denise Hunter is the author I go to when I’m kind of burnt out from reading. Her stories are dependably good and typically on the lighter side. I love that about her stories. They don’t disappoint. Summer By the Tides fell right into my expectations. A great story, written in an interesting location, with interesting characters and a storyline that has depth but doesn’t leave you feel weighed down when you’re done. I love how she brings back bits from other stories. I believe the Crab Shack, now renamed, was in one of her other series? I love it when authors do that. It’s like a little present for fans who have read a lot of an authors books. The issues and challenges the characters deal with are real. They aren’t carbon copies of other books I’ve read. They are unique and well thought through. I love the slow budding romance between Maddy & Connor. It’s so sweet. I really love the grandma even though she’s not a huge character in the book. I love how she cares for her granddaughters. I never had a close grandma so anytime there are grandma/granddaughter relationships in books I really love them. That being said, I did struggle a little bit with the way the 3 sisters were written. I loved the storyline behind their animosity towards one another but I found some of the ways it was written was a little catty and whiny. I was rather annoyed at them. I don’t know if this was intentional but I just felt like it could have been much better had they been written a little differently. But on the other hand, sisters are like that. So it’s normal. It’s natural. I’m just not a fan of seemingly petty drama-filled interactions in books. Otherwise the story was great. I loved it. I can’t wait for Ms. Hunter’s next book. She is my go to author! Love her writing. I received a copy of this book from CelebrateLit. I was in no way required to write a positive review. All thoughts are my own.

A sweet, clean contemporary romance, author Denise Hunter takes us to Sea Haven, where secrets abound. This book deals with some tough issues; infidelity, marriage problems, law breaking, and trust issues. That’s a lot for one family, but it happens in real life. Life isn’t all rainbows and lollipops so why should Christian novels have to be that way all the time? Hunter deals with things tactfully and honestly. The characters are well developed and true to life. I appreciated that God is a part of this book, causing things to come to light and then bringing healing. And the fact that we see it’s okay to love “less than perfect” people is a good thing to have in this story. I felt as if I was at Sea Haven. I could hear the gulls and smell the water. The settings were very descriptive. I think the only thing that kept me from five stars is that it wrapped up really fast. All in all a good book and I recommend it. I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.

They have a lot of making up to do. Connor who is Grams neighbor has an attraction to Maddy. She has a lot to work out with a recent break up. All the sisters has a lot to work out. A lot of family history to work through. They start going through things at Grams and a lot of memories come. They find out a lot of family secrets. Read and see what they are. I liked the setting of the story and found the quaint place in Sea Haven, North Carolina very inviting. The author describes the area so well, you could feel the sand on your feet as you walked along the beach. It was a great place at Gram's cottage in the summertime. Those memories are special to Maddy and soon she will find herself back at Gram's place when she receives an upsetting phone call. I really liked the clever way Gram was able to get all three sisters to come back to their summer hangout. Maddy, Nora and Emma each descend on the place frantic about their grandmother. A phone call from her neighbor has them worried that Gram has disappeared. Will they be able to mend their relationship between them? Can each sister learn to trust again and lean on each other? Conner was a welcome addition to the story as Gram's next door neighbor. He always watched out for her and knew something was wrong when he hadn't seen her in a few days. Maddy didn't trust Conner as soon as she met him. She thought he had something to do with Gram's disappearance and didn't trust him at all. I thought she judged him very quickly and didn't care for her attitude towards him. She has come there with a preconceived notion that Conner is not a nice person. The story starts to take shape as we learn that the family hasn't really been close in a long time. Nora and Emma haven't talked to each other in awhile and having them there together at the cottage is going to be explosive. There are lots of secrets that have been hidden in Maddy's family that has caused hurt so deep that it has divided the family. It is easy to hold a grudge for some people but what I have realized is life is too short. All the years we walk around refusing to forgive the person who hurt us, takes precious time away that you can never get back. It was like a domino effect as secrets starting coming out and soon the sisters learn that growing up their mother had protected them from a secret to keep the family together. It was easy for each sister to blame their mother but they never knew what a precious gift she gave them to protect their feelings all these years. There is a lot of repairing to do in the family and the most important lesson they will learn is about forgiveness and trust. There is a romance blooming in the story that didn't surprise me at all. What I liked was how two people who had been hurt by relationships slowly let the wall they had around themselves fall away. The sisters luck with men are not going well and I think that helped them at least try to communicate with each other. All three are struggling with a relationship and it will take a miracle for these sisters to reconnect. There was something that Conner said to Maddy that I really liked. He said," When I can't trust others and I can't trust myself, I can always trust God." It was a perfect way for Conner to share his faith with Maddy and let her know God was there waiting for her to turn to Him for guidance. Overall good story about a broken family that must leave their pride behind, learn to trust again and find happiness. I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Whenever a Denise Hunter book hits the shelves, I have to get my hot little hands on it. It’s during these times I wish I can feed my children cereal for breakfast, lunch and dinner until I reach The End. And while all her stories are unputdownable. (I’m not above creating my own words LOL) her latest release Summer by the Tides has something uniquely special about it. This story immediately drawn me in with the initial interactions with Maddy, and from the first pages I was rooting for her success. It was amazing how immediately I bonded to her, wanting her to move past the hurt and embrace life. Another factor I want to point out is this romance had an element of women’s fiction in dealing with the relationships of the three sisters. Each sister harbored layers of hurt and secrets, and I found myself immersed in their situations, trying to figure out the truth behind their troubled interactions. I love how the author delicately addresses sensitive topics such as betrayal and family pain. And of course there is a need to mention the hero! Connor is an amazing character that is sensitive to Maddy’s need for space to process and breathe. His honest nature makes her cautious heart suspicious on different occasions, but he’s consistently transparent and it’s fabulous. One thing I absolutely loved was the setting- the beach! I could almost hear the waves lapping against the shore, almost taste the sea-tinged air. The author did such a brilliant job of painting the scenes using an oceanic backdrop. *I received a copy from the author. All opinions are my own.

If you are looking for a great summer/beach read, look no further than Summer by the Tides. This was a story of familial relationships: sister/sisters, brother/sisters, husband/wife, and grandmother to granddaughters. There are many secrets in the Monroe family past. Some known and others were waiting to see the light of day. About twenty years ago, rips tore the fabric of this family apart and they never had been put together. Their grandma prays for the girls to forgive and forge new relationships with one another. All three of them, Nora, Emma, and Maddy are brought back to Grandma’s beach house when her very concerned neighbor Connor contacts them about their grandmother going missing. All three arrive quickly since all three are hiding from what is going on in their personal lives. Secrets, secrets, and more secrets abound. I wondered if these three would ever open up and be honest with one another, forgive, and stand together and be that three chord strength to help each other. Conner is such a guy, with a tragic past as well. He slowly warms up to Maddy (after she stops being so judgy) and they have a rather nice romance that we get to watch unfold. With visits to the past and what happened to this family that fateful summer, we see how deep the hurts go for each of them. This was a story of letting go of the past, being in the present, and embracing with hope the future. I received a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

The newest book by Denise Hunter, Summer by the Tides, even though it takes place by the beach, is more than a beach read. It's story and characters within it touch on all aspects of life's journey. There is self discovery, betrayal, forgiveness and love for family and for someone special that touches Maddy's heart. Maddy finds herself without a job or a boyfriend when she is called to the family beach house in search of her beloved grandmother who has suddenly gone missing. She gets assistance from her sisters Emma and Nora and the mysterious but handsome Connor, who owns the marina and restaurant close by and lives next to her grandmother's beach house. Each person holds secrets close to their hearts and as the story continues, they each must confront their own hurts and find a way to start again. This story is set close to the beaches of North Carolina. The storms within their own lives is interrupted by a hurricane which brings them all together, even grandmother, to survive and find the love they have for each other all along. This is a powerful read that I would strongly recommend. It is a stand alone novel, but if you enjoy it please check out other works by beloved author Denise Hunter.

Shhhh.....want to know a secret? I love the magic Denise Hunter weaves when she attacks family relationships with depth. This is a family who keeps secrets and holds grudges until the day of reckoning and what may have been believed just may have been a lie. The tension in this book is palatable and the betrayals that are revealed are shocking, as in I didn’t see that one coming. I could easily identify with Maddy as I tend to be a peacekeeper also and it is a stressful place to be. The author captures it perfectly. Throw in the romance and the faith elements and you have the makings of a top notch contemporary romance. I can just visualize Gram and her plotting to throw the sisters together. I loved when everyone talked and were real and honest. My favorite quote is, “Our mistakes don’t define us—thank God. If they did we’d all be up the creek.” This should be your top beach read this summer. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher/CelebrateLit. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.

SUMMER BY THE TIDES is the newest creation by one of my favorite contemporary romance writers Denise Hunter. This one is fraught with family drama, hurt feelings, misunderstandings, and mistrust but I loved getting acquainted with Maddie and Connor (as well as secondary characters Tessie and Nora). Also, Grandma was sneaky. Gotta love her. Things are not always as they seem, people hide behind plastic smiles and try to project having it all together even when its all falling apart. Even Connor, though he was honest about losing control with the restaurant, hid behind a facade most of the time. It was nice watching them come to terms with their pain, start to move past them, and begin to heal. The romance is not as sizzling as some of Ms. Hunter's books, but it is still present. For more conservative readers, there are soft swear words. I enjoyed reading SUMMER BY THE TIDES and can't wait for more by this author. I was given a copy free. All opinions are my own.

This is a contemporary Christian romance novel by author Denise Hunter. It is filled with mystery, faith, family, secrets, and romance. Themes also include hope and forgiveness. From the first few pages my heart was totally captured and my emotions invested in this well written book. Hunter has a way with words that comes natural. Her stories sound authentic and draw readers in immediately. This is the story of three sisters, Maddy, Emma, and Nora. They have had poor or estranged relationships for years. The tension between them is so high it seeps off of the pages. My heart hurt for these sisters. It also is the story of their Gram and her neighbor, Connor. Each of these fabulous characters are well rounded and believable. They became fast friends and I wanted to keep reading to see what was happening in their lives. I felt like I was there with them because of the vivid descriptions and plentiful conversations. The beach setting is perfect for a summer read. I wanted to go there after reading about it. I hope this is made into a movie. It has so many life lessons and inspiration to share. I loved seeing Maddy’s growth. I highly recommend this beautifully written fiction by talented author Denise Hunter. It is an easy, quick, page turning read that will inspire and uplift you. My heart broke and warmed throughout it. It is a perfect book club summer selection. I rated it 5 out of 5 stars. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit but was under no obligation to write a review.

This was a different book from Denise Hunter. It veered more toward woman's fiction as it dealt with the three Monroe sisters and family secrets and fallout from 20 years earlier. I enjoyed the setting and feel that was another character in the book. The main character, Maddy, enters the book with tons of emotional baggage and following her journey kept me turning the pages. Add in the charming Connor Sullivan and the book is complete. With the themes of forgiveness and faith that God is always with us no matter what the circumstances, this book is a great read! I received a copy of the book from the publisher for my honest opinion. All thoughts are my own.

My thoughts: Wow. I have read books by Denise Hunter before and knew I’d enjoy this one. Her books are captivating. I find myself drawn in without any will to extricate myself from her words on the page. But really, they’re more than just words. I am there. This world she creates has sucked me in and I cannot draw myself out. I feel now that Maddy is my best friend and I can’t wait to hear her next story in her life. Of course, I know most authors won’t tell me more about their characters lives into infinity so I just have to come up with the perfect life that happens to her after the closing. I’m weird like that. Give me the full life story til death! You can read the summary above to see a bit about what the book is about or the excerpt below for how the book starts. Both are excellent. Now some takeaways that won’t ruin the book for you. Each of us lives two lives. One that we ourself can see and know because we’re living it. But then the other life is the one we project that others see. That life is the Pinterest perfect, Instagram photo worthy life that others think we’re living. Maybe the truth is really a mixture of the two that we can only see when we let people close enough to see the mess and the chaos with the perfect. I think Denise did a great job bringing that out perfectly in her book Summer by the Tides and I know I enjoyed being along for the ride. Maddy is a perfectly loveable character that you want to hug and throttle at the same time. Meeting Connor was so fun. And then there are the sisters and I’m so glad they came into play. Losing her job because she fell for an evil man who seduced her boss and her while stealing her promotion? That’s quite the first chapter right there. Makes you know the book is going to be an excellent one! Grab yourself a copy and dive in. If you like real life romance with a tiny bit of mystery thrown in this is the book for you! I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
