Sukey's new step-pa is a mean, bossy man. Every day Sukey wakes at dawn to work in the garden. All her step-pa ever does is watch her and yell if she so much as stops to fan herself. Sukey's ma calls him Mister Jones. Sukey prefers the name "Mister Hard-Times."
Son one day, Sukey runs away to her secret place by the ocean. There, she calls up Mama Jo, a beautiful black mermaid. Mama Jo's got a surprise for Sukey; a magical kingdom beneath the sea without time or pain. But it's also without people. Is it really better than the world above?

Sukey has a step-pa and he is very mean to her. He makes her work all day and gets mad if she even stops to take a break. There is one place that she can go to get away...the ocean. She can call up Mama Jo who is a beautiful mermaid. Mama Jo offers to take her away to a beautiful place under the sea. The only bad thing is...there are no people there. Sukey must make a decision whether to go there and get away from her step-pa or figure out how to make life with people a better place to be. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. Pinkney does a brilliant job using a scratch board technique that is very unique. The folk tale is based on a compilation of similar stories told from West Africa to the Carribean islands.

This story was good. Instead of the mermaid wanting to become human, she was satisfy to live in the water away from the world of men. Sukey is a girl who 's been having hard times with her mothers' new boyfriend but the mermaid tries her best to make Sukey happy.
