Overview

Is it possible to embrace suffering as a privilege, rather than a punishment? Beloved authors Katherine and Jay Wolf offer readers the bold invitation to trust a known God with an unknown future, as well as practical insights into surviving anything by redefining how we think about everything.

After miraculously surviving a near-fatal brainstem stroke at age 26, as told in their memoir, Hope Heals, life for Katherine and Jay Wolf changed forever - and so did the way they viewed God, the world, and themselves in it. There was no going back to normal after such a tragedy. Yet Katherine and Jay learned that suffering is not the end, but rather the beginning of a new story.

In Suffer Strong, they invite us into this new story as they share universal lessons and helpful practices that will help us to:

  • Recognize we are being equipped for an uncommon assignment, not cursed by our story.
  • Transform our unmet expectations into brave anticipations.
  • Disrupt the myth that joy can only be found in a pain-free life.
  • Rewrite the narrative of hard circumstances by turning our definitions of suffering into declarations of strength.
  • And, ultimately, thrive even in the lives we never imagined living.

About the Author

Katherine Wolf is a survivor, communicator, and advocate. Originally from the South, she met her husband, Jay, in college. They married and moved to Los Angeles to pursue law school for Jay and the entertainment industry for Katherine. Their son, James, was born in 2007 and six months later, Katherine’s life nearly ended with a catastrophic stroke. Miraculously, she survived and continues her recovery to this day, including having a miracle baby, John, in 2015. Katherine and Jay have shared their journey of steadfast hope and whole-hearted living with hundreds of thousands of people at live events in thirty states, and to millions more online since 2008. They released their first book, Hope Heals, in 2016 and in 2017 launched Hope Heals Camp, a healing community for families with disabilities like them. Katherine, Jay, and their two sons currently reside in Atlanta. Connect with them at hopeheals.com or @hopeheals on social media.

Katherine and Jay joyously and honestly continue to openly live their journey through a life they did not plan. We are reminded that joy is not based on circumstance and suffering is not always physical. Suffering of any kind is a common human condition and Katherine and Jay have a lot to say about what we can do about it. Let yourself be encouraged through them!

We all make plans, but they don't always turn out the way we expect. Suffer Strong is a story of plans gone awry, but redeemed in a miraculous way. The Wolfs have faced many struggles - most would say many more than their fair share! And through it all, they have allowed God to use their suffering to reshape their lives in a way to honor Him, bring Him glory, and truly live a joyful life. This book will make you cry. It will also make you laugh. Every "Oh, no!" moment is met with an "Oh, wow!" response. Suffer Strong is honest and funny and totally relateable. This is no Pollyanna approach to bad things - life is hard, waiting is painful, but God is always in the midst of it all, willing to give greater meaning to a new path full of joy - in spite of the suffering. Go read this book - you do have the time. I kept reading while cooking supper and loading the dishwasher.

One of the best books I've read in a long time. If you read Hope Heals, then you already know the depth of wisdom that's poured out on every page. Jay and Katherine have brilliantly written Suffer Strong by weaving the strands of humor and hardship, joy and pain within the needed message that "God has made you to do the hard thing in the good, good, story He is writing in your life". - Katherine Wolf Since receiving my copy, I've struggled to put it down. I have laughed, cried, and fist pumped my way through each chapter. Every page brings a new revelation into the purpose of our pain and the realization that our suffering can actually be the catalyst to our refining. As Katherine says in the Epilogue, "my upended life has revealed my second-chance life. The redefining of me has become the refined me. And I truly love my life." Such an encouragement to allow God to rewrite the narrative of our own lives and to show us how He can use our pain for His glory and for our good.

Wisdom seeps from the pages of Suffer Strong. Whether you read it as a sequel to Hope Heals or as a stand alone - you will be changed in your perspective, perseverance and person. Suffer Strong is an anthem to living life well no matter what has come your way. An inspiring book that addresses the reality of life with limitations through brave, honest, funny story and reflection. The way Katherine and Jay cheer readers on to preserver by re-framing and redefining the curve balls life throws at one, is a message we all need to hear.

This book is written by an amazing young couple who suffered in countless ways due to Katherine's brain stem stroke at 26 years old. They are honest, encouraging and most of all hopeful. I can't think of anyone who should not read this book! 12/10
